Streeting was asked on Sky News about tax rises and potentially abolishing the Triple Lock to pay for Burnham’s National Care Service plans. He said of opposition attacks on tax rise proposals:
“We’ve got to stop scaring the public around ways in which we could fund social care … to be fair to Andy Burnham, what he said is we’ve got this difficult issue in social care. No one’s wanted to touch it. He’s running towards it. He’s grasping it. And he will have a national conversation with the country about how we pay for it following the Casey Commission. I think that’s the right grown-up responsible way to do it.
Problem solving, not point scoring as Andy regularly says. And I think that is a sort of approach, that’s the sort of political leadership people are crying out for. And there’s an opportunity not just for the Labour government, but for other political parties to work with us in that endeavour and show that politics can be a force for good again.”
