With nominations now closed for the May 7th elections, attention is turning to the more colourful candidates on the ballot paper. Step forward Marx de Morais, standing for Reform in Camden’s South Hampstead ward. De Morais has been on a political journey like almost no other. He stood twice as a Conservative council candidate in Camden before quitting the party in 2018, denouncing the Tories for spreading “xenophobia” and declaring he could no longer represent them in good conscience. He promptly reinvented himself as an independent, then threw himself into Change UK, for those who remember that car-crash. At some point he found his way back to the Tories, serving as Deputy Chairman of the Hampstead & Highgate Conservative Association. His profile page on their site has since been memory-holed. Now he’s pitching up under the Reform banner, nominated in Frognal. His views on Farage must have evolved quite a bit. Conservative, independent, Change UK, Conservative again, Reform…
