Lisa Nandy said Estonia provides a good example of a functioning Digital ID. Are you sure about that…
In 2021 an Estonian hacker got more than 280,000 personal identity photos “following an attack on the state information system” holding Digital ID records:
“The culprit had already obtained personal names and ID codes and was able to obtain a third component, the photos, by making individual requests from thousands of IP addresses… A Information System Authority RIA database holding document photos was compromised.”
Estonia is always held up as the best example of a functioning Digital ID. Off go your records…
UPDATE: Fraser Edwards, CEO at UK digital identity company cheqd.io said:
“Aside from whether this should be mandatory or not, centralised ID systems need to be limited to the absolute minimum data required, with strong safeguards to avoid them becoming surveillance tools or targets of hacks. The use of such databases need to be tightly constrained in law, and should use privacy-enhancing technologies to prevent “phone home” capabilities allowing governments or third parties to track when and where an ID is used. The future lies in signed, verifiable data unique to both the issuing organisation and the individual holder, ensuring that even if basic details like an address are known, they are meaningless without the proper cryptographic proof.”
Reform MP Danny Kruger welcomed adult film star Bonnie Blue’s support for the party, adding:
“I’m not going to be judgemental about people who want to vote Reform. We want all the support we can get – quite like Bonnie Blue.”
