Yesterday, Reform UK unveiled a set of energy ‘policies’ to issue a ‘stark warning’ in a press conference on Net Zero, hosted by Richard Tice and Farage. Their proposals include:
- A windfall tax on renewable energy generation. A tax?
- A solar farm tax on farmers receiving renewable subsidies. A tax?
- A ban on Battery Energy Storage Systems. A ban?
- A mandate for National Grid to bury power cables underground. Increased spending?
Predictably the policies have been panned. Taxing farmers, banning technology, and forcing cables underground at enormous cost left even sympathetic voices unconvinced. In a briefing document given to hacks yesterday Reform said it would put all the policies in place once it entered government. A party spokesperson now tells Guido that the plans are only a “direction of travel” – not official policy commitments for Reform’s next election manifesto. A little short of a backtrack…
