The Tories will announce that they will cut the cost of a new home by £50,000 today at Conference. From the overnight trails:
- £50,000: Cut up to £50,000 from the price of a new build by removing red tape and net zero building rules.
- Future Homes Standard: scrap it, along with the 2027 heat pump and low-carbon requirement, saving about £30,000 per home.
- Other building rules: water efficiency rules (about £3,100), EV charger requirements, and wider internal staircases cut.
- Grocery Tax: abolish the extended producer responsibility packaging levy.
- Tax code: simplify it, with every Treasury minister given a simplification mission.
- Planning: scrap Section 106 agreements and the Community Infrastructure Levy, and replace them with a new infrastructure levy under local councillor control.
- Heathrow: back a third runway.
- £100,000 childcare cliff edge: scrap.
- Aarhus Convention on housing requirements: leave it to remove the discount on judicial reviews.
- Nuclear: speed up new plants and stop the SNP blocking them in Scotland.
- Quangos: abolish Natural England and the Environment Agency, with their functions moved into Defra.
So far Badenoch and Shadow Chancellor Andrew Griffith have said Inheritance Tax Abolition is an “aspiration.” What else would you announce…
