The Secretary of State told Fox News overnight:
“Let me preface this by saying I have to be careful. There are some things I cannot say on air, for a lot of different reasons. Suffice it to say that what happened, what almost happened, and what could have happened in the UK over the weekend is a very serious situation. It clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor. I won’t go into great detail about that yet.
I do want to thank the authorities in the United Kingdom, who have been very cooperative and on top of it. I know a lot of people are disturbed by the news that some of these people have been released on bail while they are being investigated, and obviously we’re engaging with the authorities on all of that. Beyond that, I would say they’ve been very cooperative and very helpful on a very serious incident.
It ties us to the reality that we are dealing with elements in the world, Iran for example, who have openly threatened to attack American interests globally. We’re always going to take that very seriously. There will be repercussions if that ever happens or is even attempted. What happened this weekend could have been, and I think was, a very serious threat. I want to thank the UK for their cooperation and help on it.
There’s a lot more news that will come out on this in the days to come. But there’s only so much I can say right now, other than that this was a very serious thing and it was responded to appropriately.”
