Earl Spencer has issued a formal apology to Piers Morgan after incorrectly claiming in his new book (released today, for those keen on a pre-reprint edition) that Morgan was Editor of the Mirror when the paper published private photographs of Princess Diana in 1993. Morgan exploded on his YouTube channel about it yesterday, and vowed to set the lawyers on Spencer…
A spokesman for Spencer said this afternoon:
“Mr Morgan was surly and annoyed when Earl Spencer called personally to tell him that he was not welcome at his sister’s funeral… As an historian, accuracy is important to Earl Spencer. He therefore wishes to clarify that his assumption was incorrect. Earl Spencer apologises to Mr Morgan for this error.”
Unlikely to be enough for Piers…
UPDATE – Morgan wants more: “Earl Spencer has apologised to me for his defamatory lies published in his new book, Swan Song, published today. But I am pursuing legal action against him and his publisher Penguin to have the lies removed, and damages paid to the King’s Trust.”
Asked by Lobby hacks about his past comments on Trump (“any UK politician who gave Trump the time of day should be ashamed right now”) Burnham was blithe:
“Politicians say things throughout their career, but now the important thing is to focus on the moment you are in.”
