The job advert says it will be an “exciting time” for a court which aims to “provide a high quality and consistent service to those appealing local tax decisions.” The courts will be overloaded…
The ad says:
“It is an interesting and exciting time to be joining the Valuation Tribunal Service. Government proposals on local taxes, for example the High Value Council Tax Surcharge, will change the scope of cases and issues that the Valuation Tribunal for England hears, and with that the scope of our work. The Registrar and Chief Clerk will have an important role in implementation of these changes.”
HMRC has already hired an army of new valuers to inspect homes. The Tories are railing against the plans – Shadow Housing minister David Simmonds told Guido:
“Labour know their new family homes tax is going to cause chaos in the tribunals system, on top of the deluge of work from their extra red tape on the private rented sector. This tax on aspiration will prove to be more trouble than it’s worth.”
The OBR expects one in five property owners to appeal the revaluation imposed upon them by HMRC. The taxman is set to revalue more than 315,000 homes every five years. So that’s 63,000 appeals every half-decade…
The Valuation Tribunal for England got just over 8,000 appeals in the whole of 2024-25, carrying 4,700 forward from April 2024. New appeals bring an almost tenfold increase in caseload for the tribunal – good luck…
Former Treasury minister and adviser to Burnham in the Makerfield campaign Lord Jim O’Neill, who has turned down a role in his government, said Burnham’s first statement Commons was:
“The last thing investors wanted to hear… gilt yields have risen by a 0.25% in one day, which is a lot. We’ve not had that since Liz Truss days… If your country is under the focus of ‘can they come up with a sensible fiscal strategy’ on a day when the markets think ‘well no, you’re not showing any sign of it’ you’re going to have a tough day…if it stays like this your mortgage rate is going up.”
