Existing guidance tells staff to accommodate patients “according to their presentation“. Even more absurdly, it instructs staff to follow a child’s preference over a parent’s:
“In some instances, parents or those with parental responsibility may have a view that is not consistent with the child’s view. If possible, the child’s preference should prevail even if the child is not Gillick-competent.”
NHS England (which is supposed to be closing down) says policies will follow “shortly“, and blames the Cabinet Office for “co-ordinating the response“. The Cabinet Office says this is nonsense, and nobody has been stopped from updating anything. It really shouldn’t be this complicated…
