The CDU got a five point increase on their last performance. With 83% total turnout the AfD, which under Alice Weidel campaigned on immigration and the economy, surged into second place with 20.8%. A ten point increase in four years…
That means the AfD is now the official opposition. The right-liberal FDP crashed out of the Bundestag entirely – punishment for the coalition. Sahra Wagenknecht’s left-wing BSW failed to reach 5% which saves Merz having to find a third party to work with in government thanks to seat adjustments. Now coalition talks begin…
Weidel says the coalition won’t work: “We’ll have fresh elections – I don’t think we’ll have to wait another four years.” Merz has created headlines with statements on Trump: “It is clear that the Americans, at least this part of the Americans, this administration, are largely indifferent to the fate of Europe.” Trump meanwhile says it’s a “great day for Germany and for the United States of America”…
