Yvette Cooper and David Lammy are ploughing ahead with plans to approve China’s massive new embassy in London, despite security concerns from Britain’s intelligence services that it could grant China access to vital communication cables. Unsurprisingly, our American allies aren’t thrilled…
A U.S. House of Representatives committee has now issued a stark warning, highlighting “significant security concerns” for the UK. The Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, chaired by Republican Congressman John Moolenaar’s posted on X:
“The PRC’s mega-embassy in the UK raises significant security concerns: from interference and surveillance to risks for sensitive infrastructure like London’s financial services. We must work to urgently address this issue and work with our allies to protect national security.”
Earlier this month, over 1,000 people gathered to protest against the proposed 20,000-square-metre compound—24 times the size of the current embassy – with Robert Jenrick calling out the plan as “wrong for our national security,” as “the number one espionage threat to this country is China.” Meanwhile, Team Trump is raising fresh fears over China’s potential to spy on Diego Garcia if Keir Starmer forces through his Chagos surrender deal. As Lammy and Rachel Reeves continue their charm offensive with Beijing and Starmer treads a tightrope over Ukraine, the mega-embassy plans won’t help the PM when he heads to D.C. next week…
Speaking at his speech on how to achieve “progressive capitalism” Wes Streeting fired a dig and Andy Burnham:
“Bond markets are not bond villains and fiscal rules matter.”
