Last week Reeves was forced to prepare to water down her non-dom tax raid after it emerged that the exodus of wealthy taxpayers was costing the Treasury the equivalent revenue of over half a million average earners. Now it turns out the government didn’t even bother to properly look at the economic fallout of the brain drain. Tory MP Blake Stephenson asked a written question on whether the Chancellor had assessed the impact of her tax-hiking spree on economic growth and tax receipts:

Translation: they didn’t. Tax minister James Murray instead churned out the usual waffle about “repairing the public finances” and threw in the sanctimonious line about making the rich “pay their fair share.” No wonder industry leaders haven’t had a kind word to say about Reeves and Murray…
