“I made those remarks six years ago in 2019, led rather along this path by, I remember, an Italian journalist I was being interviewed by at the time. It was a time in Britain, by the way, which with very fraught politics and there was high emotion about many things in Britain at that time. I consider my remarks about President Trump as ill-judged and wrong and I think that times and attitudes towards the President. I think people have been impressed not just by the extraordinary second mandate that he’s received from the American people but the dynamism and energy with which he approached not just the campaign but government.”
Mandy adds that Trump has “fresh respect – he certainly has from me and that is going to be the basis of all the work I do as his Majesty’s Ambassador in the United States.” Despite breathless reporting in the UK media Trump is still to sign off on Mandelson’s accession to the ambassador role.
