Another day, another another grim report proving Reeves is providing anything but ‘growth’. Latest figures from the ONS reveal a staggering 47,000 drop in employment in December. The sharpest fall since the pandemic…
Job vacancies have also nosedived, plummeting to just 740,000 in December from 858,000 the day before the Budget bombshell, as businesses brace for tax hikes set to hit in April. Predictably, economists are sounding the alarm. KPMG’s Yael Selfin warned, “the rise in business costs due to the Budget measures should have a cooling effect on labour market activity and make higher wage settlements less likely” while the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) said there were already “warning lights” in the jobs market. The latest figures have also prompted renewed “caution” from economists on future interest rate cuts. Shadow Business Secretary Andrew Griffiths didn’t mince his words:
“These figures show a worrying trend. Trash talking business confidence, more red tape on job creators and the Budget’s ‘jobs tax’ mean that as sure as the sun rises in the east, employment is now falling. I feel for young people desperate for work who find the door slammed in their faces due to Labour’s plans.”
