Nick Clegg announced last night that he was leaving Zuckerberg’s Meta as Vice-President of Global Affairs, to be replaced by his deputy, the former Republican adviser Joel Kaplan. Liberal Democrat peer Richard Allan, who was Facebook’s European Policy Director from 2009 to 2019, says on the Today Programme this morning that installing Kaplan is a “smart choice.”
“From the company’s point of view having as your global lead having someone who is well respected by the US administration helps, so it’s a smart choice that the company’s made.”
Joel Kaplan served as a Deputy Chief of Staff to George W. Bush and has longstanding links to the Republicans. Allan adds that arch-remoaner Clegg can now focus on the “wide range of interests he has in the UK and Europe.” Oh boy…
