Tory MP and leadership hopeful Robert Jenrick has been seen in Ottawa chatting to Conservative staffers on The Hill as he goes on a tour of Canada. Steve Baker isn’t the only one…
Eyebrows have been raised in SW1 and in Canada. A source in Ottawa says: “Pierre is one of the best communicators in the business, his number one piece of advice would probably be never make an unforced error like that.” Jenrick has, despite the election, headed off on his trip to liaise with popular Canadian Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre and bring his low immigration, high growth message back to Westminster. The trip has been long in the books. Odd to do ahead of that leadership bid…
UPDATE: Jenrick’s office says the trip is a long-standing commitment and only a “flying visit”.
Douglas Alexander – a friend of Starmer’s – was asked on Sky News if the PM will be in post at the next election. He wasn’t so sure himself:
“I think he will. There are no certainties but of course I think he will lead and I think he should because, frankly, on the biggest call in this parliament he’s exercised the right judgment, which is to keep us out of someone else’s war.”
