Later this month will see HMRC organising a “cross Civil Service discussion” to lament about the fourth anniversary of George Floyd’s death. You might think given more recent world events, woke Civil Servants would have moved on to injustices anew…

Topics up for discussion at the session will include where Treasury pen-pushers were when they first heard the life-altering news. A co-conspirator gets in touch to say this is “a waste of civil service time, especially with all the reports of public sector productivity stalling.” The fourth anniversary of the killing of George Floyd falls on May 25th. This year the date falls on a Saturday. Naturally the HMRC Customer Strategy & tax Design team have had to bring the date forward to ensure their performative solidarity doesn’t fall outside of working hours…
