Labour is scrambling for a defence following the Mail on Sunday’s deep dive into Angela Rayner’s longstanding ‘domestic bliss’ at her husband’s property a mile away from the one she is claiming to the taxman and electoral authorities to have lived in. No wonder Rayner was the only panelist to forget when she bought her house back in 2019…
On LBC this morning Labour MP Abena Oppong-Asare tried a bizarre new angle: “We’re seeing personal attacks on certain individuals, and it is predominantly women and it is predominantly politicians of colour” – presumably she means redheads. David Lammy said yesterday, apart from trying to deflect the scandal as a non-story: “I think there is a different arrangement and expectation for the Prime Minister in this context, we’re not yet in government.” As if “its not illegal if we’re in opposition”…
Tax questions aside, if Rayner was actually living with her newlywed husband over the period while remaining registered on the electoral roll at her bought property on Vicarage Road, she would have broken the law by voting in more than a few elections:
Stockport Council has said it is “reviewing reports” on Rayner following the same pressure that led Greater Manchester Police to reassess whether to investigate her properly. That’s all while Labour takes down advertisements featuring their own Deputy Leader. For how long can this farce go on?
