Rayner says the voting public should believe her when she says “I’ve done nothing wrong“. She said this morning that she won’t publish the recent tax advice exonerating her “because that’s my personal tax advice“. She falsely claimed that her financial details dating back 15 years were being asked of her. She said: “I don’t think we’re going down the road of MPs, whenever somebody says, what’s happening with your tax, we want to see all the information and detail…” The problem is that she herself already went down that road.
Rayner demanded four years ago that a Tory by-election candidate be ordered “to publish in full her tax returns“. This wasn’t even for an MP, let alone the potential next deputy Prime Minister…
Rayner led the charge against Nadhim Zahawi. She told the Commons that he had to “come clean” or go and attacked his leader for “failing to deliver the integrity, professionalism and accountability he promised.” In 2020 Keir Starmer said: “We need a transparency revolution. There should be no power without accountability, and true accountability requires transparency.” Guido can think of a good place to start with that “revolution”.
