The vast majority of Labour MPs stayed silent over the weekend as their leader praised a murderous communist dictator. Why? AsĀ this 2008 Early Day Motion shows, Castro had support from across the Labour Party, including many so-called moderates. A motion “commending the achievements of Fidel Castro” was signed by centre-left MPs including Keith Vaz, Lindsay Hoyle, Virendra Sharma, Karen Buck, Clive Efford, Andy Slaughter and Kelvin Hopkins, as well as thinking lefties like former Miliband aide Jon Cruddas. Obviously Corbyn, McDonnell, Thronberry, Diane Abbott and the usual cranks backed it too. Given his penchant for persecuting gays and locking up “deviants”, goodness knows what Castro would have done to Vaz…
