President Le Pen? mdi-fullscreen

Marine Le Pen is on the Marr Show this Sunday, Guido suspects it will come as quite a shock to BBC viewers that the Front Nationale leader is a sophisticated politician and not the French fascist fantasy of the Guardian reading classes. Unlike “Crooked Hillary” her likely opponent Alain Juppé actually does have a criminal conviction for misusing public funds. This is assuming the 71 year-old Juppé doesn’t lose in the primaries against the younger and ever energetic Nicolas Sarkozy.

You can forget any idea of a socialist candidate making it to the final round. France’s answer to Ed Miliband, François Hollande, is barely polling in double digits, stuck in a range between 11% to 15%. Elsewhere European socialism is in retreat as a result of their open door immigration policies being rejected by voters.

In Austria the Freedom Party’s Norbert Hofer is likely to become president next month.  Matteo Salvini’s Lega Nord and Beppe Grillo’s 5-Star Movement are set to defeat Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi over his constitutional referendum. All of these politicians are to differing degrees sceptical about the EU…
