Seems ConservativeHome readers increasingly agree with one minister’s assessment that George Osborne is “exactly like Gordon Brown – he is a social cripple, he is awkward, a schemer”. Osborne has plummeted down the Cabinet league table rankings in the last month, falling from 8th place to a lowly 19th with the 800 Tory party members who responded. Meanwhile in the next leader stakes, just 14% of the 700 party members polled backed George. That puts him in fourth place behind Boris, May and even Liam Fox. Sajid is half a percentage point from knocking him into fifth. The perceived wisdom has been that Osborne’s position among members would take a real hit if and when the economy suffers a downturn.
