Meanwhile in the next leader stakes, just 14% of the 700 party members polled backed George. That puts him in fourth place behind Boris, May and even Liam Fox. Sajid is half a percentage point from knocking him into fifth. The perceived wisdom has been that Osborne’s position among members would take a real hit if and when the economy suffers a downturn.
