The health service regulator Monitor have placed Cambridge University Hospitals Trust in special measures after their inspectors found it was “inadequate“. The Trust was haemorrhaging £1.2 million a week, largely because they cocked up the implementation of the electronic patient record IT system e-Hospital.

The e-Hospital system is widely regarded as a poster child for disastrous NHS trust IT projects. Three years ago CUH plumped for the most expensive contract they could and tied themselves to it for 10 years. Within three years of signing the deal, their Addenbrooke hospital has gone from being one of the safest and most respected in the country to special measures. Envy of the world…
