Waheed Ahmed is a 21 year old student who is one of nine Britons detained in Turkey suspected of attempting to travel across the Syria border to join ISIS. He is also the son of Shakil Ahmed, a prominent Labour councillor in Rochdale. The local MP reacts:
On the Rochdale family detained today, I would like to thank the authorities for stopping this family entering what is effectively a warzone

I've been in touch with the father of 1 of young men who was there & he's shocked & confused as to why his son was trying to enter Syria

At this stage I don't want to say too much until I receive more information from the police on whether a criminal offence has been committed

Cllr Ahmed says in a statement:
“My son is a good Muslim and his loyalties belong to Britain, so I don’t understand what he’s doing there. If I thought for a second that he was in danger of being radicalised I would have reported him to the authorities. He’s studying a degree in politics and sociology at Manchester University and has a good future ahead of him.”
So that’s what he was doing on his laptop locked in his room all that time…
