The über-safe Tory seat of Tonbridge and Malling will hold a primary open to all registered voters in the constituency to choose their new MP. The size of the majority originally piqued the interest of at least one Downing Street insider, though the selection battle is now somewhat more difficult to stitch-up. It’s not quite an Open Primary – they can have any candidate they like so long as they are blue – all candidates have to have already been on the pre-approved CCHQ list before the primary was announced. A committee will further whittle down the names before putting them to the people in November. Maybe Crispin Blunt should have applied?
