There was big media news overnight as former BBC Director General Mark Thompson was appointed president of the New York Times. Thompson, who infamously admitted the Beeb was guilty of a “massive left-wing bias“, had announced he would stand down after the Olympics. Gun-toting George Entwistle was named as his replacement in July.
