Tonge is Out Jihad Jenny Jumps Before Pushed from LibDems

After refusing Nick Clegg’s “apologise or resign” ultimatum, Jenny Tonge has had the LibDem whip removed and Guido hears she is to leave the party. Respect’s first Peer?

Not bad for five hours work and a tip of the hat to Student Rights for pushing this to us.

Think it’s time for a pint…

Clegg Issues Tonge “Apologise or Resign” Ultimatum Jihad Jenny Shared Platform with Hamas Extremist 2 Days Ago

Nick Clegg has finally woken up to today’s mess and apparently told Baroness Tonge that she has “a few hours” to apologise or resign. The comments that have caused Jihad Jenny trouble today were made over a week ago, but it is clear they were not a one off, nor was her willingness to share a platform with unsavoury characters. Just two days ago Tonge popped  up at the Queen Mary’s University’s Palestine Solidarity Society.

Guido hears that all known Jews and critics were evicted before the start, including the man who filmed Tonge’s outburst last week, as well as Jewish Chronicle journalists. On the stage, Azzam Tamimi, a controversial activist, declared that he was ready to become a martyr for his cause. Tamimi went on to say that he wished he was in Hamas and that the banned terror group were the only “true representative of the Palestinian people.” And Jihad Jenny just sat there. Is that official LibDem policy?

And it gets worse, the reason Tonge was silent was because she agrees with loonies like Tamimi. Last year she gave an interview to Iranian state television that stated:

“It is necessary for the international community to include Hamas in the Middle East peace process, as it is the only trusted faction [in the occupied territories] in which the Palestinian could rely upon”

The LibDems weak holding statement this afternoon said:

“The Liberal Democrats are wholehearted supporters of a peaceful two-state solution to the Israel / Palestine issue.”

Not all of them it seems…

Cat Got Your Tonge Nick? Tory MP Writes to LibDem Leader

Tory MP Robert Halfon is on the attack. This open letter has just been sent to Nick Clegg:

Dear Deputy Prime Minister,

As you may be aware, several media outlets are displaying videos of Baroness Tonge, the Liberal Democrat peer. The video shows her making the following comments:

“Beware Israel,” she says. “Israel is not going to be there forever on its present performance. One day the United States of America will get sick of giving £70 billion a year to Israel.” The Lib Dem peer goes on to say that she thought of Israel as “America’s aircraft carrier in the Middle East” but that one day people in the United States would say “enough is enough”.

She added: “It will not go on forever, it will not go on forever and Israel will lose its support, then they will reap what they have sown.”

Baroness Tonge has an appalling record of strong anti-Israel rhetoric. Too often, her remarks carry an offensive anti-Semitic tone. You will know this from personal experience, as you were forced to ask her to resign from the Liberal Democrat frontbench in 2010 following similar comments. As the time, you said that her comments were “wrong, distasteful and provocative”.

I know that, like me, the Liberal Democrats are supportive of a peaceful two-state solution in Israel and Palestine. Baroness Tonge’s remarks are hugely damaging and disruptive to those efforts. On this basis, I would ask that you consider withdrawing the whip from her with immediate effect.

Yours sincerely,

Robert Halfon MP

The LibDems are yet to ask Baroness Tonge to retract her comments, and it beggars belief that they are deemed acceptable in a mainstream political party, let alone one of government.

James Murdoch Jumps From News International

James “it was the weekend and I was on my Blackberry” Murdoch has quit as the Executive Chairman of News International.

Remains at BSkyB…

UPDATE: Twitter comment of the day: “As one Sun begins, another ends.”

LibDems Call for Clegg to Remove Whip From Jihad Jenny Weak Clegg Wriggles

The Chairman of the Liberal Democrat Friends of Israel, Gavin Stollar, is not very happy with Jenny:

“LDFI strongly condemns Baroness Tonge’s latest outburst not only because it is wrong but because it is contrary to Lib Dem Party policy. Jenny Tonge is an irrelevant, siren and marginal voice in the Liberal Democrat Party and we call on her to resign the Lib Dem whip. If she truly believes the things she says, how can she justify being a member of a Party whose policies are diametrically opposed to her views on Israel and the Middle East, a subject on which she talks on almost a daily basis.”

Guido understands a statement from HQ is imminent…

UPDATE: A LibDem spokesperson said:

“Jenny Tonge does not speak for the party on Israel / Palestine. Her presence and comments at this event were extremely ill-advised and ill judged. The tone of the debate at this event was wholly unacceptable and adds nothing to the peace process. The Liberal Democrats are wholehearted supporters of a peaceful two-state solution to the Israel / Palestine issue.”

Not sure that will be enough for everyone…

UPDATE II:

Lawyer Logic Paradox

On Sunday Guido had a premonition which, as can be seen above, he tweeted.

A law firm called Archerfield Partners has written to MPs and peers on the Joint Committee of Privacy and Injunctions saying they act for the ex-wife of an unnamed Asian head of state, and threatening the 26 MPs and peers. The lawyers gave them until 2 pm yesterday to remove from the parliamentary website this publication.

In the letter, which has come into the hands of The Telegraph, they say that Guido’s mystical premonition tweet breaks the terms of an interim injunction which unfortunately Guido hasn’t seen. Surely by asserting that the tweet breaches the injunction these learned lawyers have themselves just outed their client by confirming the injunction involves the subject of the tweet? Could they not be in contempt of their own injunction, if indeed it exists? Who knows? No one we know had heard of it until now…

Pilgrim Consultation Due to Start Imminently Nick Hurd Confirms Wider Scope

Nick Hurd has confirmed that the government consultation into “Pilgrims” is “about to start imminently”. He told a feisty Westminster Hall debate on taxpayer funding of trade unions:

“We will seek to review and rebalance the amount time off for Trade Uion duties… the current level is significantly more that the private sector… The consultation I’ve just described is focussed on the civil service, where my responsibilities as a Minster lie. However other colleagues who have responsibility for these matters in the wider public sector have been asked by the PM to review the position in their sectors.”

A good starting point is why should the taxpayer fund those that want to destroy the Olympics, costing the taxpayer even more money…

LibDem Peer Says Israel “Will Not Be There Forever”

A LibDem Peer who was sacked as their health spokesman for anti-Israeli comments in 2010, has struck again. Video has emerged online of Jenny Tonge telling a meeting at Middlesex University last week:

“Beware Israel. Israel is not going to be there forever

It will not go on forever, it will not go on forever. Israel will lose it’s support will lose its support and then they will reap what they have sown.”

She also remained silent and did not protest when a fellow panellist, Ken O’Keefe, compared Jews to Nazis. Given Tonge has previous in this area, that includes accusing an IDF aid team of harvesting organs and spinning for Palestinian suicide bombers, Guido had to check whether Tonge still actually had the LibDem whip. She has, but is Nick Clegg really prepared to let her spew this sort of bile while serving under his party banner?

UPDATE: The Commentator has a full witness account of Jihad Jenny’s outburst.

PMQs LIVE: Olympic Wring Edition

Flashback: Huhne and Severance Pay

Guido was in the room when Chris Huhne stood next to Sayeeda Warsi at their joint “Labour’s Legacy of Waste” press conference in those heady coalition days of August 2010. He stood there, perfectly calm, with his characteristic blank stare. He showed no sign of disagreement when Warsi said:

“That’s why today, I have written to each of the candidates in the Labour leadership contest and asked them to confirm that they, and other former ministers supporting them, intend to renounce their ministerial severance pay. At a time when people across the country are being asked to tighten their belts to deal with Labour’s economic mess, it is unacceptable that the very people responsible, walk away with up to £20,000 each. Forfeiting this pay would be the first step towards accepting their responsibility, and the first sign that they had come to terms with the mistakes of their past.”

Whatever happens in court on Friday, Huhne broke the Ministerial Code. If that is not “a mistake of the past”, then what is?

Red Len’s Olympic Wring

If Ed has a moment today between PMQs and rubbing shoulders with the French socialist presidential contender François Hollande, he might want to make some very loud noises about Unite boss Len McClusky’s call to arms this morning:

“The attacks that are being launched on public sector workers at the moment are so deep and ideological that the idea the world should arrive in London and have these wonderful Olympic Games as though everything is nice and rosy in the garden is unthinkable,” he said. “The unions, and the general community, have got every right to be out protesting. If the Olympics provide us with an opportunity, then that’s exactly one that we should be looking at.” He also said members of the public should support the campaign by engaging in “civil disobedience”.

Ed might struggle though, what with Unite being his biggest donor…

Tim Shipman deleted his tweet saying…

“If Chris Huhne did not exist all the world’s vilest politicians would have had to invent him in order to feel better about themselves.”

Tax Silence from Ken’s Chums

The leftie blogosphere is normally first out of the blocks on supposed tax avoidance and general hypocrisy when it comes to personal finance. However it seems Ken  has stunned them into silence with his latest shenanigans. Top bloggers and avid Ken cheerleaders have chosen to remain tight-lipped about the tax-avoidance – despite his public statements condemning those who engage in similar practices – saving himself over £50,000 by paying corporation tax at a low 20 or 21 per cent rate.

The left-wing blogs from Dave Hill, Mayor Watch, Adam Bienkov, The Scoop, Boris Watch, The Staggers, Political Scrapbook, Liberal Conspiracy, Labour List, Labour Home and Labour Uncut are all covering this race closely. You won’t hear a peep out of them on this subject, despite plenty being written about Barclays today…

UPDATE: Mayor Watch get in touch to say that they consider themselves to be neither left-wing nor Ken fans. Guido is happy to set the record straight.

Enda Game On

Ireland has just tossed a mighty spanner in the EU-works.  The Taoiseach has confirmed in the Dáil that the Attorney-General has advised a referendum is necessary on the EU’s fiscal union plan, “The Irish people will be asked for their authorisation in a referendum to ratify the European stability treaty”, Enda Kenny told the Irish parliament. Cameron was unable to veto the plan but the Irish people might just be able. The last time a €urozone prime minister promised a referendum on the EU, the EUrocat dictators replaced him with unelected technocrats. That won’t happen in Ireland.

Currently 20 cents of every euro of Irish taxes is going to pay the interest on the €uro-bank bail-out debts. The Irish bail-out plan is costing €54,800 per Irish household. Ireland’s future thus looks a lot more bleak than Iceland’s path of debt default and a devaluation of 60% two years ago which has seen the country rebounding: exports and manufacturing are growing by 20%, tourism is back near all-time highs, real wages are rising, unemployment is declining sharply, interest rates fell from 18% to 5.5% and the stock market has rebounded 50% from its lows. The bond rating agencies have already re-rated Iceland investment grade. In contrast the €uro-banker’s bail-out will only burden the next generation of Irish who don’t flee the crushing debts not of their making…

Ireland’s long love affair with Brussels has come to an end. It is not inconceivable that Ireland could vote no… making it stick is the problem…

Flashback: Ken Can’t Hide His Lying Eyes

The old ones are always the best. In a week where Ken Livingstone’s integrity and honesty has fallen somewhat short, Guido was reminded of one of the most blatant examples of dishonesty displayed by the former Mayor. When asked about his age and health by Total PoliticsKen claimed “I still don’t need glasses”. Really?

Did Cameron Look the Gift Horse in the Mouth?

The Standard is reporting the slightly bizarre news that the Met loaned Rebekah Brooks a police horse to be housed at her country pad in Chipping Norton. It was clearly a very stable relationship…

The loan took place in 2008 while Lord Blair was in charge. This is around the time Cameron was courting Brooks and their close friendship struck up. Given that they used to go riding together, you have to wonder whether Dave ever rode this dirty steed? The PM has been saddled with another night mare…

Tories Organise Huhne Blitz in Eastleigh

Requests have been sent to nearly 2,000 Tory activists to descend on the Chris Huhne’s Eastleigh constituency this Sunday, just two days after his next court appearance. Eastleigh has long been a tense subject in Tory circles after Conor Burns nearly took Huhne out in 2005, though a by-election would be a nightmare for the government, with a straight yellow on blue fight on the cards.

It doesn’t look like the Tories will be pulling their punches though…

Guardian Slave-Masters Recruiting

According to the Guardian’s Polly Toynbee ‘Workfare is transparently unfair to most people, substituting slave labour for big companies.’ Except when the Guardian do it. “The scheme is unpaid…”
