You Could Be Mayor! mdi-fullscreen
Tory Mayoral hopefuls have until tomorrow to get their applications in. So if you want to be mayor, get a move on. (Doesn’t matter if you are not a Conservative, you can join at the same time as you put your application in).

Guido has surfed the websites of the so far declared, and gives starting prices:

Nick Boles, no campaign website as yet, expect the full bells and whistles, pimped up, moderniser site. Meantime take a look at his apolitical charitable think tank Policy Exchange. The modernisers’ candidate. 3/2 favourite.

Victoria Borwick www.mayor-for-london.co.uk running on a right-wing platform with the slogan “a redhead, not Red Ken”, advised by Cornerstone’s spin-merchant Nick Wood. She is loaded, financed Shagger Norris in the past and is well prepared for this fight. Guido can’t help feeling that if she is going to run on her hairstyle, it needs updating. 2/1

Richard Barnes, www.richardbarnes.info weirdest website with “ice cream cone of liberty from the heavens special effect”. If it had sound effects it would play the theme tune from the Twilight Zone. 100/1

James Cleverly, www.jamescleverly4london.com all round nice guy, blogger, this is a smart (clever even) profile raising move. 50/1

Warwick Lightfoot, www.lightfootforlondon.com sounds posh, actually went to a comprehensive, the other redhead in the race – 50/1

The possibility of a surprise announcement is real. Boles was not the first choice of the Cameroonies, one name they would have liked to have seen in the race is David Ross of Carphone Warehouse. Worth hundreds of millions, if Mike Bloomberg can become mayor of New York, why not Mayor Ross? “… the phones of London are ringing, they seem to say, turn again…”

UPDATE : Lee Rotheram is a surprise. The author of the best-selling The Bumper Book of Government Waste has announced he is standing on an “abolish the Mayor” ticket. At last, some sense.
