He told people who signed up for his emails that;

By giving me your details you are agreeing to receive communications from me. I will not pass on your details without consent. Data Protection Act 1988: The information you supply will be treated in the strictest confidence in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1988.

He then emailed their address out to everyone who signed up for his email. Doh!
