Guido wonders if the drugs publicity backfired on the moralisers and helped Cameron and the Tory party at large:
- Recognition – Cameron is now more of a household name – unlike Fox and even Davis.
- Naffness – he is not seen as naff. He is seen as not only younger, but on the same planet as the rest of us, the majority of the population having tried recreational drugs, the minority having not. The younger you are, the more likely this is to be the case.
- The chattering classes – recognise him as one of their own. From Hampstead to Islington, from Notting Hill to Chelsea, Cameron is not “one of them”, but “just like us”. The chattering classes set the terms of debate, it will help the Tories to have them on board for the first time since 1979.
