Standards are slipping at the Honourable Fiend which I fear has been taken over by someone less funny and far less honourable. We all make mistakes, to err is to blog after all. But we don’t tell porkies about it afterwards for good reason – we will get caught out. And so..

So on balance, I reckon this will be the turning point. Provided Budd doesn’t put the boot in (and his report is published at about lunch time on Xmas Day) public sympathy will now see Squire Blunkett through (unless the other noblemen decide it’s time he spent more time in the forests of the North). By the time we all sober up and get back to Weight Watchers in the new year, he’ll be in the clear and perhaps even somewhat ennobled – a tough man who can find it in his heart to love.

Two days later on Wednesday the Blunkett resigns after Budd whispers in his ear about the smoking email. Oops.

So, did we call it right on Blunkett? I’d like to think so.

Got it right? Well getting it right would I think mean predicting Blunkett would go. So who blogged that? Over at Non-Trivial Solutions money definitely was put where mouth was, here and many other places, these blogs said he’s going and in some cases bet on it with William Hill. We did not predict he would be ennobled or in the clear. Without any qualifications or equivocation, that would not be calling it right.
