Mini-Reshuffle Runners and Riders

As reported yesterday, Downing Street have signed off the plans for a mini-shuffle should the CPS press the big-red Huhne button. All talk of the one time leader in waiting being able to cling on, despite a charge, has withered away, even amongst his most loyal Praetorians online. As Guido told you back in May, the two LibDem front-runners for the Energy and Climate Change brief are Ed Davey and Jeremey Browne:

“Both are Orange Bookers, though Browne is seen as more right-wing which will likely dent his chances for the soppy climate change brief. Obviously Laws is toxic and Guido understands that Sarah Teather has little chance of a promotion.”

Huhne has managed to convince everyone he’s a bit left-wing, which makes Davey seem a likelier option. Though given he held the LibDems Foreign affairs brief before the election, it would make sense to pop him in the Foreign Office and promote the telegenic Browne to the Cabinet.

After she lost control of her backbenchers, leaving the Prime Minister floundering at the height of the phone hacking crisis, the speculation that Warsi is for the chop is growing. Grant Shapps is much tipped to replace her as Tory chairman. Newsnight’s permanent fixture Michael Fallon wouldn’t be too happy though. The current Deputy Chairman has been pressing the flesh recently…

Guido reckons two birds could be killed with one stone here. Shapps, the uber-loyal Cameroon Housing Minister could go and beef up the CCHQ operation, Warsi could stay out of trouble sticking little windmills on a map in Huhne’s old job, and a LibDem could replace Shapps. However it is unlikely that the yellows would be willing to swap a Cabinet job for a mere Minister. Though given the fact that Huhne walking would be their third Cabinet cock-up in a row, perhaps Dave should put his foot down.

LibDems Prepare for Huhne Charge

Certain LibDems, who should know better, are pretending that Chris Huhne could cling on to his Cabinet post even if he is charged by Essex Police for forcing his wife to lie on his behalf, and then instigating a cover-up. How exactly would these one-time bastions of morality justify having someone who the police believe to be a blatant and wanton liar formulating laws and policy at the top table?

Harriet Harman survived bumping a car when she was in government, but her crime does not involve a potential jail sentence and, as far as Guido knows, she didn’t threaten Jack Dromey to remain silent about it. His crimes aside, after thirteen years of Labour destroying the honourable resignation, the speed and dignity at which David Laws walked was refreshing to say the least. Here was someone taking responsibility for their actions and doing the right thing immediately. Compare and contrast this to his yellow comrade Chris who has threatened his wife and children and is using them as a human shield to protect his fatally-wounded political career. Such cowardice is beyond contempt.

There would be no love lost with either the PM or the DPM if Huhne was to walk, but if he is going to continue to delude himself that a lawmaker can survive being a law-breaker, then Downing Street should have the decency to sack him. It’s not like a reshuffle can be that far off anyway…

+ + + Huhne Re-Interviewed by Essex Police + + +

Chris Huhne and Vicky Pryce were  interviewed by the police for a second time on Wednesday, this time in Essex. There are reports that a file will be going to the Crown Prosecution Service. Breaking….

UPDATE: Guido’s boy in blue is being very tight lipped, but did suggest that they “wouldn’t bring him in for a second time so publicly without wanting to charge. Up to the CPS now, spineless bunch,” adding “the hangdog expression on his face was quite something to see.”

UPDATE II: The file will be going to CPS “soon” apparently. Money is piling in on Huhne to be leave the Cabinet.

Huhne Worried About Allegations

It took less than 24-hours to unravel, especially with Andrew Neil’s tweeted aside that Gordon swore to “end” Murdoch when he deserted Labour. But Brown is not the only one with an axe to grind. Taking a break from threatening his children and framing his wife, Chris Huhne found time for a rare TV appearance. The fit and proper Secretary of State said allegations that have surfaced were “very dangerous indeed” and “a real problem”. For Murdoch that is.

Huhne went on to criticise the Sunday Times. What could his beef with them possibly be?

Huhne Hiding Behind His Son
Only 5% Polled Believe His Story

Another uncomfortable weekend for Chris Huhne. On the same morning he popped up to question David Cameron’s judgement in employing Andy Coulson, his own personal failings were laid bare across two newspapers. Two wrongs don’t make a right, but it’s pretty rich from someone using emotional blackmail against his teenage son. Huhne threatened him that his mother will go to jail, in a bid to try and get the A-level student to silence her. The police have the messages as a key piece of evidence…

In the election Huhne used pictures of his infant family in his campaign literature, just weeks later he would be exposed for cheating on them. “Where would he be without his family?” one leaflet asked. Well on the moral high-ground for starters.

A YouGov poll has shown that 60% of the public doubt Huhne’s story, with only 5% believing he is innocent of the original speeding offence. 40% say he should walk right now. The lengths to which Huhne is ready to go, to save his career, including using his children as a human-shield against his wife, shows just what sort of man we are dealing with here.

As the weeks go on and the evidence piles up, you will see the true make of the man when he is cornered…

Huhne Discusses Resignation

In a rare media appearance, Chris Huhne popped up on the Today program this morning. “I am saying there is no truth in those allegations” he claimed. An odd choice of words when he reportedly told the police “no comment”. We all know what you are saying Chris, we just don’t believe you. Apparently “incompetence is not necessarily a matter for resignation…”

Forcing your wife to break the law, and instigating a cover up, is though.

Essex Police Raid Pryce Home, Take Phone

This blog may have in the past queried the progress of the Essex police investigation into Chris Huhne. With the obtaining of the Pryce recording and statement from the Sunday Times we became more optimistic. The Mail on Sunday’s scoop this morning that just over a week ago Essex police raided Vicky Pryce’s home to obtain her son Peter’s phone with text messages on the phone from Chris Huhne gives us more confidence that they are being thorough.

Clearly the police suspect Huhne is trying to pressure his ex-wife via the children, in this you have the measure of the man, to save his career he would have others lie for him. Even by the low standards of politicians Chris Huhne is a particularly selfish man who lies without compunction.

It could be difficult to prosecute Huhne if Vicky retracts her signed statement. The CPS are by all accounts wary of prosecuting a Minister of the Crown, who would without doubt have to resign to defend himself. Nevertheless, given the circumstantial evidence it would be a travesty of justice if the CPS nervously failed to proceed essentially because Huhne is a government minister. It is not for the CPS to decide whom they believe, it is time for a jury to determine the truth.

+ + + Sunday Times Hand Over Huhne Tape + + +

Roy Greenslade reveals in his Standard column today that the Sunday Times’ lawyers have declared that there are no legal grounds for appealing the court order demanding that they hand over of their Pryce/Huhne tape and documentation to Essex Police. The hour is getting late Chris. Time to reach for your simple sword of truth and that trusty shield of British fair play.

Guy News: Huhne Ducks Resignation Questions, Speeds Off

Guido thought he would pop along with a Guy News camera to record a rare appearance by Chris Huhne in public. The Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change was speaking to the FT’s Global Greeny Types Conference in the City. After seeing the cameraman and sitting in the car for a few minutes mulling it over, he finally made a run for it:

He marched off eventually to the hotel’s restaurant in the opposite direction to the conference – can’t think why. It has to be said that his estranged wife Vicky Pryce is much better at dealing with the questions. Not sure “I don’t know what you’re talking about” will cut the mustard with Essex Police…

Police Turn Up the Heat on Huhne

Just as the LibDem’s attempt to spin that Huhne was out of the woods was beginning to take hold, he’s smashed straight into a tree and gone through the windscreen, his career once again looking like a slow-motion car-crash. As Guido suggested, a thorough police investigation could not have taken place without getting hold of the taped conversation in which Huhne orders his estranged wife to partake in a cover-up, and the document she signed promising to support her allegations in court. A court order has now demanded that be handed over.

The Sunday Times are said to be “considering an appeal”, but that strikes Guido as somewhat unlikely, given how big a story it would be for them if these two pieces of evidence were the final nail in the coffin for the slippery Secretary of State. Sources have suggested that the wind has once again changed direction and doubts about Huhne’s future in government have returned to mid May-levels. Olly Grender has been very quiet today.

Gyles Brandreth writes in his memoirs:

“Sunday, May 10, 1998

Early start: appearing on Breakfast With Frost, to be broadcast from 11 Downing Street. The Chancellor [Gordon Brown] is grouchily amiable, but so earnest — and still biting his fingernails to the quick.

After the show, he took us upstairs to his flat. He lives above No 10, while Blair and family are in the No 11 duplex, which is bigger and more like a proper house.

I was intrigued that, when he took us into his bedroom, the Chancellor rather ostentatiously opened the built-in wardrobes, as if he wanted us to see the women’s frocks that were hanging in there.

They looked quite large, but I don’t think they belong to Gordon. I assume they belong to his girlfriend [Sarah Macaulay, who he later married].

I presume he was keen for us to know that he has one — and that she’s not a ‘beard’. I don’t think he does anything without calculation.”
