Lobby Boris Bubble Deflates Embarrassingly Quickly in Newark

Astoundingly incompetent analysis from much of the political media this evening speculating on Boris standing in Newark. Only one problem – the local Tories have already selected their candidate back in November. CCHQ have been on a by-election footing for weeks as Guido reported in The Sun two weeks ago.

Michael Crick on Channel 4 News and the BBC’s Nick Robinson as well as Norman Smith have both been speculating that Boris might stand in Newark.  A little bit of investigative Googling would have revealed Robert Jenrick’s web page on conservatives.com.robert-jenrick

And his Twitter feed:

robert-jenrick

Or the press release

Cllr Stuart Wallace, Chairman of Newark Conservative Association, said:

“The Association wish to express our thanks for the work Patrick has done for Newark and for many of his constituents individually, over the last 13 years, both as a Conservative and as an Independent MP.

“Following Patrick’s earlier decision not to stand again, we selected a superb candidate, Robert Jenrick, who has already been very active locally.

“The Association are united in support for Robert and will be campaigning to ensure that he will be elected as Newark’s next MP.”

Crick Debunks Huhne’s Telegraph Spin

Regarding the Telegraph’s report this morning that Vicky Pryce had not co-operated with the police,  Huhne has briefed their crime correspondent, Mark Hughes, that he doesn’t think his estranged wife pulled the trigger:

“We have always thought that she was never going to make that allegation. But we didn’t know what she was going to do, she had made the allegation to the press, how did we know what she was going to say to the police? I think the phrase that has been used is that her allegations were to wound not to kill, because even if this all goes away she has still caused a huge storm. Chris is confident, but his confidence is not just because she hasn’t told the police anything, it comes from the fact that he hasn’t done anything.”

Enter stage right Newsnight’s Michael Crick with a comprehensive rebuttal of The Telegraph’s story. Crick says he has learnt:

Vicky Pryce is “irritated” by the report. “It’s rubbish that she’s not co-operating.” Ka-pow

Huhne’s car was photographed at around 11.20pm on the night in question, Huhne landed at nearby Stansted just under an hour before, while his wife was 40 miles away. Spin that.

As Guido said  there is evidence from Pryce to satisfy newspaper lawyers, according to Crick she has pledged to back up the papers in court if necessary. We might see this on Sunday. Boom.

Nick Clegg Kicked My Baby

Or did he? According to BBC North, Clegg accidentally kicked a small child in a push chair on a walkabout in Oldham yesterday. He then tried to blame a less than impressed Michael Crick who was doing his usual two-paces-behind-asking-awkward-questions trick.

However, as PoliticsHome picked up, the father of the alleged victim has rushed to tweet Nick’s innocence, denying it happened. Guido isn’t so sure though, especially when you look at the footage from fourteen minutes here. Of all things that could go wrong on the stump, injuring small children is very high up the list.

There’s definitely some sort of contact.

Flashback : The Smith Institute Exposé

If you are new to the Smith Institute story this January 2007 documentary expo which Iain Dale presented and Guido scripted for broadcast by the old 18 Doughty Street internet TV station gives you the background. This video really did kick off the official Smith Institute investigation. It was whilst filming outside the Charity Commission office that a press officer came out and asked Guido what we were doing. In conversation Guido was told that the reason they hadn’t started an investigation was they had no official complaint! The next day Guido filed his complaint, days later the investigation was announced. It was not too bad an effort for a first time citizen journalist producer…

Some bloke called Crick had a go as well – see here. Hmmm…

Crick is on the Venture Capitalist’s Case Tonight

Tonight he is taking a look at Ronnie Cohen’s generosity. Crick is brilliant isn’t he, where does he get his story ideas?

Incidentally, talk is that Newsnight are going to try out a hot, hungry, new investigative reporter soon…

Tony Blair threatens Ed:

“If you had a strong political lead that was combining the politics of aspiration with the politics of compassion, I still think that’s where you could get a substantial majority…  If I ever do an interview on [the state of the Labour Party], it will have to be at length…”

Left on Left says:

The lefties are attacking because the panellist is a millionaire and lives in a London home worth upwards of two million. Someone had best tell them he’s called Ed Miliband.
