For all his many failings Tony Blair had a brilliant sense for the public mood, he was able to articulate on emotional subjects sensitively. The most talked about issue this morning in offices and workplaces across the country is not the unemployment figures, it is how could this happen again in the same borough again?

Gordon has just demonstrated that he is completely incapable of sensing the popular mood. Asked a straight forward question about the death of Baby P he went into a prepared answer full of bureaucratic jargon. His tone was really off key and made worse when he made a cheap partisan allegation. Clearly something is wrong in the Haringey Children’s Services department despite the Victoria Climbié inquiry.

The Children’s Services director should not investigate her own department. Sharon Shoesmith should resign.

This is the current front-runner for Guido’s Ask the PM competition prize. Suspect Gordon is not going to answer Luke’s* question on the technicality that it is not strictly speaking an economics question. Still not too late to enter, details here, competition closes and the prize winner will be announced Monday midday.

The man Alex Salmond called the big frightened feartie from Fife has run away from a couple of tough questions. Where is your courage Gordon?

Yesterday was closing day for Gordon’s “Ask the PM” on YouTube gimmick, Guido and the Taxpayers Alliance uploaded their questions just before the close yesterday evening. Guess what: this morning Downing Street put the closing date back two weeks!
Maybe they only want Andy Marr to ask Gordon a question? Perhaps they will commission Deborah Mattinson to do a citizen’s consultation? Totally pathetic. This exposes the whole Downing Street “engaging with the people online” stuff as bullsh*t spin. This is classic New Labour “consultation” and “engagement”, they want the online equivalent of a Potemkin Village.

Still that means another two weeks for you co-conspirators to Ask Gordon about the economy. To your webcams!

This could be a lot of fun. Get your webcam out and ask Gordon your question about the economy and upload it to the YouTube Downing Street channel before the close of tomorrow. Then we all go back and vote on which questions Gordon has to answer next week. Remember WebCameron? The co-conspirators always got their questions voted the ones Dave had to answer…

As well as the fun of asking Gordon a question that will undoubtedly be seen by tens of thousands of co-conspirators, Guido will throw in an extra prize of his own to the video submission he judges best- two tickets to the preview screening of Frost Nixon – An Epic Battle for Truth in London next week. The prize includes the opportunity to quiz the screenwriter and producer Peter Morgan afterwards. The film dramatises how three years after being forced from office, Nixon remained silent. But in summer 1977, the steely, cunning former commander-in-chief agreed to sit for one all-inclusive interview to confront the questions of his time in office and the Watergate scandal that ended his presidency.

Those Icelandic fundamentalists even have their own propaganda site. Gordon saved us from the Icelandic terror threat by cutting off their funding and freezing their assets. Err, except now he intends to lend them £3 billion of British taxpayers money… doh!

Guido hasn’t seen any details other than the couple of sentences in Dave’s CiF article. It is a start. Being able to put off paying the VAT for two quarters will be a little bit of much appreciated help to small businesses.

Certainly far more help than Gordon’s scheduled 2% hike on small business corporation tax. In a recession the last thing businesses need is a tax hike. How will a tax hike help small businesses create jobs?

According to ConservativeHome the Tories have decided that the narrative and the popular perception of Gordon “saving the banking system” is too hard to overcome currently. As head of government Gordon is the financial pilot in the cockpit waving to admirers as he performs acrobatic and risky financial stunts above the heads of the public – who can only hope he doesn’t come crashing down on their heads.

Vince Cable is ignored on the ground shouting random directions to attract attention from the crowd. Little can be done to avoid Gordon claiming credit and to be fair, his contemporary version of the Swedish bail-out model was better than the Paulson Plan Mk 1. The Tories plan in their attack to hold off until recession bites and then point the public towards Gordon and give him the credit he deserves for the magnitude of the bust.

Might work, though Gordon will try to pass the buck as ever, blaming Iceland or the non-appearance of the tooth fairy for Britain’s woes. The triumphalism of this week may fade from the public’s memory pretty quick. Danny Finkelstein has nailed it to Gordon, “If this is a triumph, I’d hate to see a disaster“. Fink’s argument needs to be re-scripted in populist form.

In a month or so attack videos need to replay Gordon intoning an end to “boom and bust” over and over again at different times in different ties, than replay him asking last week “has another bank gone bust?”, zooming in slow motion on to that, for once, authentic smile. As recession brings unemployment and repossessions, his self confession to presiding over the age of irresponsibly low interest rates and a failed regulatory regime he designed needs to be drummed into voters – along with Gordon’s smile of triumph amidst disaster.

So Guido is not the only one who thinks Brown is the Prime Mentalist. The meme is mainstream now.
