A number of Labour MPs who usually attend conference haven’t bothered to make the short trip down to Brighton this year. Back in Westminster, the Tories have for a few weeks now been offering safe seats and cushy ministerial jobs in efforts to convince them to defect. Potential Labour turncoats know they will be booted out by constituents if they jump ship, so the Tories are promising them safe new seats in blue strongholds. Guido is aware of one moderate Labour MP who has even been offered a frontbench Government job “within six months”. The sweet words whispered from No. 10’s fixers: “Come and see Dave and George”.
