Establishment Panic Over Scottish Freedom

Just two weeks ’til the referendum on Scottish freedom and finally Westminster’s chattering classes are waking up to the bookies halving the odds on a ‘Yes’ victory. The Times’ Red Box has gone into panic mode this week, with Scottish political editor Lindsay McIntosh yesterday warning against bubble complacency:

“The first is seen by many in the political bubble. In it, the Nationalists are losing the practical arguments about the economy, so are on course to lose the vote badly. The other, seen by some outside, shows “yes” quietly stealing victory… Unionists need to brush up on their messaging if they are not to be responsible for a dramatic redrawing of the UK after September 18.”

Alice Thomson this morning goes further, imploring: “Wake up unionists, you could really lose this”:

“If Scotland votes Yes, all hell will break loose – and the unionists’ complacency will be to blame. It’s time for Westminster to focus on the independence referendum.”

Rachel Sylvester also has growing concerns, telling Dave:

“If he becomes the Conservative prime minister who presided over the break-up of the United Kingdom, he will face immediate calls for his resignation from within his party.”

Squeaky bum time…

This is one area Miss T can take some credit, there’s still bitterness over the Poll Tax and this cemented Tory a swear word in Scotland. There education system has not helped either they think it was the English(Tories) that where responsible for the Highland clearance and that those most hated of scot’s Tony & Gordon lead the Tory party, the Tories with bush that went to war in Iraq etc….

No, if Scotland goes independent you will, sadly, be stuck with the ‘subsidy monkeys’. Boris wants money for the ‘Super Sewer’. HS2 and 3 to bring in commuters from Manchester, Cross rail has already had them in our pockets and new runways/Boris Island is the next project. Luckily we didn’t have to pay the Scots to host the Commonwealth Games but The London Olympics cost us dearly. Central funds were used to redeveloped London and don’t forget the National Lottery ‘Good Causes Fund’ was, and continues to be, raided to pay for the games. This was the fund that helped local groups look after disabled children, for example. London receives the greatest amount of funding per head, then Northern Ireland, then Scotland. On the other hand, London puts more INTO the exchequer, followed by Scotland. Food for thought, have a chew..

Aside from a White Paper and a 650 page document answering all of the questions continuously and repeatedly put to him along with other stuff they haven’t thought of and lots of detailed appendices and yet Better Together promulgate the nonsense of no plan, no answer. You can view the doc online via The Scottish Govts website or order a hardcopy (you don’t need to be a voter). This is the most detailed proposal for independence any country has ever put forward. Labours retort comprises 3 pages of typed information, is vague and took two years to put together. To be fair there was more of it but Ed didn’t like it. The Coalition Government official response was in the form of a series of smaller White Papers. These are NOT available online. You can request separately for £25 each from the House of Commons. Cost over £125 for something that looks like they wrote it on the back of a fag packet.

PFI as you say, 300 bn – Most have inflation kickers. Lenders can convert to inflation linked payments

There is 120 bn for the clean up of nuclear power stations. Paid for up front. It’s goods and work. Inflation linked in other words.

Pensions – triple lock so inflation linked or more.

Guarantees. Here the relevant figure is the expected losses on the guarantees.

35 bn for the post office. 50% of the LGA fund. BT pension fund. ….

Even just the unfunded pensions are increasing at 640 bn a year. Total taxes 600 bn.

They aren’t going to be paid.

Remember too, you cannot print your way out of inflation linked debt.

That means no assets. It does not mean no debt/liability.

The annual rate of increase of the liabilities is 640 bn a year

Given taxes, all of them, only raise 600 bn a year, its clear. The pensions debts/liabilties/promises/contracts will not be honoured.

The Scots are motivated by three things: hatred, greed, and cowardice.

They vie with each other for primacy. Until recently, their greed for the English money tree and their cowardice has held their hatred for the English people in check. As the tantalizing opportunity to do harm do England draws closer, however, their pale, blubbery lips are wet with excitement.

It looks like the Scots are not content with being cowering wee timorous beasties forever under the English jackboot.

The YES camp have two trump cards to play which the NO camp have no defence or strategy to challenge.

    1. Only the YES camp can promise no more Tory rule from London, for which a majority of Scots didn’t vote. i.e. (no more Thatcher,Major or Cameron governments).

    2. Whoever wins the next election is going to have to make the most savage cuts in government spending in history, at least 50% over 5 years. Only by voting YES to independence can Scotland avoid those cuts by virtue of having all the oil & whiskey revenue to themselves.
In fact the Scots can see government spending increase to the level of Norway.

Scotland’s pensions bill is c13.3 bn a year, health care costs c11 bn and social security c8 bn.

Roughly Scotland spends 62billion a year and raises 45 billion in tax.So who’s finding the shortfall when the English are gone? 1 in 3 Scots in taxpayer funded jobs, which kind of reduces the options for tax hikes.

Oil reserves declining – loss estimated at 3 billion a year to the economy. Yes there is more oil but it’s around the Shetlands, who may well decide Norway is a better option for them.We also need to consider how much of the territorial waters would be owned by the Scots. The current border has no precedent in international law.Could be Scotland ends up owning less oil than it currently does.

What, will their currency be? Mr Salmond has said he would keep sterling, but its status would have to be similar to how banana republics in the Caribbean use the US dollar — with no say over the economic policy that affects the value of that currency.

As an Englishman, I would be sorry to see Scotland go. as a taxpayer, I would be very happy.

I demand only my right, and not a favour; I demand what is the birthright and privilege of every Englishman.

Gentlemen, when a minister sets himself above the laws, as Mr Perceval did, he does it as his own personal risk. If this were not so, the mere will of the minister would become the law, and what would then become of your liberties?

I trust that this serious lesson will operate as a warning to all future ministers, and that they will henceforth do the thing that is right, for if the upper ranks of society are permitted to act wrong with impunity, the inferior ramifications will soon become wholly corrupted.

I think it’s unfair to blame Cameron for losing Scotland. Problems really came to a head under Thatcher and have never been resolved. The UK population has risen sharply over the years yet while this was happening the Scottish population was dropping just as fast. Disinvestment, managed decline and even from the Labour Party a sense of complacency. The Tories knew they’d get no support and so have never made any effort. This left a gap for SNP. They’ve given Scots free prescriptions, free university education etc. No wonder they are seen as the only party that cares about Scotland. Apart from improved economic status, no nuclear weapons, rolling back privatisation of the Post Office and better treatment of rural areas, keeping Water free and nationalised, preventing back door cuts to NHS, preventing austerity cuts of approx 20% off the block grant, jobs being ‘rationalised’ to elsewhere in the UK, apart from them I can’t think why Scots would vote YES. Whoops, yes I can – gets rid of the costs of the Lords who are unelected, the MPs who are screwing us and any children allowed near them.

A split UK will have much less bargaining power with other nations. To join the EU Scotland will need to join the ERM – wasn’t once enough for them? – as membership of the Euro “at a future date” is a pre-condition of membership. So how can they do that holding onto the pound? All the uncertainty of this will cause damage to our currency and markets and will undermine the pound. Yet Scotland still wants to cling onto the pound presumably shadowing it as the Barbados dollar does the US dollar or something. But what happens if the EU starts encouraging people in Scotland to use the Euro as well as the pound…?

I really cant see what independence will give them except control over their own armed forced. I think they are chasing a chimera. Salmond says getting an independent Scotland is what drives him … but what will drive him after that? Nationalism is a dangerous force it doesn’t just dissapate into the ether.

There are a hundred nightmare senarios which the “dump the pov scots” bridgade seem never to have cogitated on. What happens when Scotlands gone? Will Northern Ireland and Wales drop off? What will be our negotiation strength if we’re just reduced to England? Of course there was politics before nation states but it was a bit tribal, baronial and bloody. I dont like the way Salmond monopolises the historical debate either. You’d think the 2nd Civil War, the Union of 1707 and the Darien scheme had never happened to listen to what some Scots actually know about their own history. I honestly believe some of them think they were a colony? “A thousand years of English divide and rule” one said to me. But there hasn’t been divide and rule, they chose to joing and they might chose to leave. I think in the name of unity there has been too much appeasement of identity politics and not enough real effort put in to challenge the SNP’s narrative.

I find it particularly funny that they think they are better than UKIP when in reality they are just the mirror of UKIP. Where do all these splintering Nationalist movements end? Is it the start of the end of the nation state as we know it?

Oh well the ultimate nightmare senario is that they go all Grenada and get invaded by the US or something. Maybe they should join a non Eurpoean trading block – Caricom?
