I can’t help the nagging suspicion that Douglas has been a useful idiot in all this. Are UKIP laughing with him or at him? Time will tell.

        As Lord Ashcroft tweeted yesterday:

“Do we now get the anonymous smearing of @DouglasCarswell after his defection to @UKIP #dontbesurprised”

        Then tweeted today:

“Sadly I suspect many Tory voters doubt the sincerity of Cameron’s position on Europe. #needsbeefingup”

While getting Carswell to defect was a coup, it could become a PR gift for the Tories if he loses the By-election, and what UKIP really need next is not another Conservative defection but one from Labour, then people will have to take them seriously.

        Voter says:

That’s right. If the electorate believes that the outcome of voting Ukip may be Con 4, Lab 4, Ukip 2, LD 1, then they might reconsider their options.

As it is, they know that the outcome will be Lab 6, Con 3, LD 1, Ukip 1 (maybe).

And John Kerry’s threat a year ago to launch “an unbelievably small” strike against Syria.

“That is exactly what we are talking about doing, unbelievably small, limited kind of effort.”

At the end of the day, even that was an exaggeration.

      Totally incorrect
The local parties PPC nomination still stands for the general election.
For the by-election the NECs choice is standing.

And yes there are huge similarities between UKIP and the Labour party of the 1970s like leaving the EEC.

Farage had better watch his back as Carswell would be calling the

Philip Davies, here called a Tory Eurosceptic MP, seems as wide of the mark in his description of Carswell as it possible to be. Read Carswell’s statement on his own blog on the reasons for his leaving the ‘Conservative’ Party. It is as principled , rational and truly conservative a statement as could be wished. Add to this his decision to submit himself to a by-election under his new colours and you have a rare MP of courage and principle. Well done !

    “Quote of the Day”
There are only two ways to proceed in politics. Our wrong dogma driven way, and the right but now redacted way.
The true aims of communism and capitalism are one thing. But when both are corrupted by elites, its something altogether different.
