Gallery Guido: Disaster Strikes Retreating Speaker

The retreating Speaker is now offering to split Robert Rogers’ role (which he always wanted) but have the new administrative position answer to the Clerk (which he never wanted).

This is a disaster for John Bercow – to save his job he has significantly strengthened the Clerk and created an alternative power base backstage.

But this isn’t the end, or even the beginning of the end.

The current legal and procedural shambles is the end of the beginning.

Carol Mills will be doing half the job at twice the salary. At the moment she still has the grace and favour grandeur of 3 Parliament St.

This is clearly untenable.

The process needs to start again.

Without the need for procedural knowledge a multitude of candidates will present themselves for one of the most prestigious jobs in the public service.

Carol Mills’ employment lawyer is going to make a fortune.

His shock and awe tactics have exploded in his face. Employ someone who knows nothing about the job, nothing about Britain, make it a woman, make it a lesbian, make it controversial, make It so controversial that anyone who attacks it is even more controversial and get William Hague to endorse this product.

How did you know he’s a ‘little man’? *innocent face*

  12. 12
    Maqboul says:

As Carol Mills has not actually been offered the job, I’m not sure that her “employment lawyer” will have a leg to stand on. I doubt that she has tendered her resignation on her existing position either, if she had any sense.

  13. 13
    Denis says:

Not much more mind. I only thought 13 years of sexual abuse of 1,400 children in my constituency, covered up by my labour council and chief of police, carried out by men of P@kistani origin worth one page.

  14. 14
    Labour are intrinsically evil says:

“What we need to do is make sure this issue doesn’t divide Rotherham communities”.

Weren’t they already divided into abusers and abused?

  15. 15
    Anonymous says:

“But this isn’t the end, or even the beginning of the end.”
For a cull specifically designed to reduce the perceived downside of badger overpopulation, might work equally well with that plague undermining our houses (of parliament) politicians.

  16. 16

As she’s under investigation for alleged malfeasance and gross incompetence. I doubt that her resignation would be accepted at this stage.

  17. 17
    Maqboul says:

That is precisely why they have got themselves into this horrendous mess: by trying to make sure the issue didn’t divide communities. They should have just done what was right and damn any indirect consequences.

  18. 18
    Cuckoo says:

Bloke on radio just explaining each Muslim councillor brings 2000 labour votes hence avoidance of issue by local Labour Party

  19. 19
    Horrified says:

Rotherham was not the only community in the North and the Midlands to have uncovered such abuse. There have also been arrests or prosecutions of groups of men in 11 towns and cities, including Oldham, Rochdale and Derby.

Andrew Norfolk of the Times 2010
“In the other cases, overwhelmingly, they were men of Pakistani origin and we need to understand why this has been happening,” said Mr Norfolk.

I can answer Mr Norfolk’s question. Senior police officers are ignoring crime in their areas. If reports of drug problems and abuse problems surface it appears as if you aren’t doing your job correctly.
The prospect of promotion is wihdrawn, promotion and career is all they care about.

You can walk into any city in the UK and observe drug transactions and illegal brothels with young girls operating within a very short space of time, if you know where to look. The big question is, why can’t the police see it?

After several uncomfortable questioning sessions with boys in blue, the answer was clear to me, they don’t want to look. It makes life difficult for senior police officers and their political bed-fellows.

  20. 20
    Vote UKIP says:

Paul Lakin said those responsible should be brought to task, regardless of ethnicity or colour of their skin. EH? They are all P@kistani. WTF is Dave not on the ‘phone now sacking the fucking Hunt Lakin now? Never forget, this is the Council that went after a UKIP supporter who wanted to adopt a child.

  21. 21
    nell says:

I wonder how much bercow’s stupidity and ego over this affair is going to cost us the taxpayer?

First the Deputy Clerk who should have got the job because his qualifications were far and above anybody else’s interview for the post,is talking of going to the employment tribunal and will very likely win.

Then there’s mills who should never have been offered the job because her pitiful qualifications and background make her totally unsuitable for it , has now presumably had a formal offer for the £200k pa post plus grace and favour accommodation and will happily sue when bercow’s forced to withdraw it.

Then there’s the cost of starting the process all over again.

  22. 22
    non taxable pikey says:

The sooner we get back to One Law for All in this country the better.

Is Shaun Wright still drawing his salary? If he is, why?

  23. 23
we don't believe lessons will be learned says:

Dozens of powerful people in positions of responsibility had
the means to stop this despicable abuse over 16 long years, but
they all turned a blind eye and some covered it up.Three previous
    investigations,during McShane’s time as MP,were quietly shelved.

Exactly who was behind the cover-up?

  24. 24
    nell says:

Exactly no-one should be above the law and if you break it you should be prosecuted and sentenced. But also those leaders and officials of the police and council departments should now also be prosecuted for covering up, condoning and for failing to do their job and protect the children of Rotherham.

  25. 25
    Labour Party says:

We just love rubbing your noses in diversity.

  26. 26
    well there's a surprise says:

Bercow is a joke and he’s turning the Mother of
    Parliaments into a laughing stock.
Mills lacks experience, isn’t qualified and comes with
    too much dodgy baggage.

  27. 27
    don't you think says:

It’s just too much of a coincidence that employees of
all these different agencies turned a blind eye or
helped in the cover-up for so many years.

  28. 28

You should see that as another Labour lie.

It is just an excuse to cover up the fact that they were running policies and a system which essentially institutionalized the sexual abuse of children in their constituencies and criminalized any who objected to it.

    Vote UKIP :-D

  29. 29

That, given also the Mid-Staffordshire Hospital scandal and cover-up on Labour’s watch !

Am no fan of Mensch, but she’s been solid on this scandal.

Conservatives, including Sayeeda Warsi, do face questions though, since the Rotherham scandal dragged on into their watch.

Warsi was, after all: Shadow Minister for Community Cohesian 2007-2010, then minister without portfolio before being made Minister of Faith and Communities 2012-2014.

Was Britain’s most senior Muslim politician so out of touch with her own community that she missed any of this? Or, if aware of it, how strenuously did she pursue the matter?

Commenting on Rochdale two years ago (while still minister without portfolio, yet nevertheless the first Muslim woman appointed to cabinet), she conceded that race played a part and that even religious leaders had been involved, but fobbed it off as “a Home Office issue”. (link to interview below).

What did she do about it once she became Minister of Faith and Communications a few months later?

  34. 34
    Horrified says:

I wrote something in detail but was m’odded.

Good crime figures and social cohesion give excellent prospects for police promotion.

Good results can be achieved in two ways. Solving crime in the usual way or ignoring and suppressing crime and statistics.

Which of those two options is the path of least resistance?

If someone were to look properly they would find this a widespread problem. I certainly did in the area where I live.

On the 1st November 2014 the right of Parliament to legislate over us in 43 areas, the important ones, will be removed and be made subject to approval. They call it QMV, Qualified Majority Voting.

A brief review of the Treaties confirms the Transitional arrangements which allow, only on specific votes, for the Nice Treaty Provisions to apply from 1st November 2014 until March 2017, hence I imagine PM David Cameron’s determination to delay our referendum beyond that date, tying Britain for ever within the non-democratic, totalitarian and now clearly despotic EU.

They will be very badly adjusted in their relations with women, and that is a symptom of their feeling of being failures and that the world is against them. They are not making it with girls, and so they turn to other forms of spiritual comfort — which of course is no comfort.”
