UKIP still holding on to their vote (according to the polls) after the MEP elections. Nice.

Au contraire, the last ten UKIP scores in the polls are

          12,14,11,13,17,15,13,17,14,13

          An average of 13.9%

Either side of the Euro election their average was 15.4%. I would call that “holding up”.

Also you neglect to mention the Lord Ashcroft polls which showed them ahead in two Westminster constituencies: Thurrock and Thanet

Besides, there’s much more to it than simply getting a referendum – there’s the rather large matter of what the referendum question should actually be and precisely how it should be worded. We’ve already had a foretaste of the subterfuge and duplicity that will come into play in the unlikely event that we ever get to that stage. The government despises the very people that it is supposed to represent and demonstrates this every time one of its number opens its mouth.

    @BW

Well, it was kinda fun speaking with you again after my self-imposed decision to avoid you like the galloping pox.

But to judge on results, it was pretty desultory.

There is only any real point in communicating when substantive information exchanges. Not even the most deluded poster here (and I am not thinking about you – but Moussa say) would accuse us of having created more light than heat.

It may be entertaining for some, we have put on a show of sorts, but really it is rather like masturbating in a gale… of dubious transient pleasure and you get your own back pretty quickly.

It really endorses my original decision as being the preferred of a range of bad options. So it is to that state of relative sanity to which I propose to return.

I wish you all good luck in your endeavour, whatever that might be.

    Sincerely

Have lost count of the number of times I have stood in front of that painting over the decades and, to be honest, I still don’t really know whether I really like it or not! All other considerations apart, I would not want it on my walls!

It is all too Romantic era for me. But we were taught in art appreciation that we ought to like it. The catalogue number of 14 (mentioned above in my link) tells how early it was acquired, one of the first batch of works from the John Julius Angerstein collection, acquired in 1842. Even the PRB were not formed until six years later.

But surely art is a matter of personal taste. Like religion, it should be a case of “live and let live”. Unfortunately…

Speaking of Art and Religion (indirectly) and of paintings we ought to like, another favourite of mine with a great history is the Caravaggio which was donated to the Irish Jesuits by a Paediatrician in 1930, in recognition of their offering her support when her R.I.C. Inspector husband was shot by the IRA a decade earlier. It seems she (and they) thought it was just a copy, and it hung in their Refectory for 60 years until ‘re-discovered’:

          • Thanks for that wonderful link!

What can one say about the quite extraordinary Caravaggio? His use of chiaroscuro in a compositional sense led to some of the most dramatic paintings seen at the time. His own disorderly life reflected into this, so it seems. This painting is definitely into his tenebrist stage and paintings like these influenced a divers range of artists from Ribera, de la Tour, Rembrandt and rather later our own Joseph Wright of Derby. The latter is my favourite British artist and beats the pants off all the others IMHO.

Derby is a fairly dismal place to go to but a visit to its Museum Art Gallery brings you into contact with the biggest collection you will find of Wright’s works. An unprepossessing building from the outside, the contrast inside could not be greater. ‘A Philosopher Lecturing on the Orrery’ acts as witness to James Ferguson’s lectures in the town. ‘The Alchymist in Search of the Philosopher’s Stone’ shows Hennig Brand discovering phosphorus, by boiling up urine, whereupon it alights.

Not only great art but a historical record of the way in which the Enlightenment changed attitudes to science which enabled us to move forward whilst others, across the Channel, fell back.

But all made more dramatic by the influence which Caravaggio had exerted over the intervening time.

A symbolic reference to both East Ukraine and MH17, there is a separate inference through the Tarot card as well – sequence of dealing important. (Note the Star – meaning / arcana # where the explicit MH17 reference is drawn).

The Sunflower fields following the Sun card – First is N’evada, second is U’kraine – The sun behind the cloud of course is a divine reference to God / heaven.

If you have ever wondered why E’urope is more associated with the M’oon in it’s deeper symbolism (look at the EP building for example…) the tarot card interpretation is relevant. The moon reflects the light of the Sun is the general idea.

Would highly recommend Borge’s: ‘If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler’ – A very good read also.

Note: Nevada is the Silver State. This is obscure, but in the Original Oz story Dorothy was depicted with Silver slippers which once clicked returned her to Kansas – ie. To reality after she followed the golden path to the emerald city. They were changed to ruby for the film. The silver aspect underlying the poker game is intentional – L’as V’egas not chosen just for its own unreality or the obvious symbolic monuments.

Fun fact: The light on top of the Luxor L’as V’egas at 42.3 billion candela, the Luxor Sky Beam is the strongest beam of light in the world (non-Laser).

This incoherent light source can be seen by aircraft at cruising altitude up to 275 miles away, such as when they are flying over L’os A’ngeles. :-)

          Went to Las Vegas.

Incoherent would be the description I would attach to the whole place. :-)

Called in on some English friends who live there and whom I had met a decade earlier in Egypt (whilst admiring the Horus depictions ;-) ). I had lost their number and they didn’t do email in those days.

Of course they had gone off to China, or somesuch, so it was a waste of time! Went off to Lake Haversu City instead and walked over the old London Bridge for the first time in some 33 years. Home from home! Almost.

If you ever need to fly d’omestic in the US I do recommend S’prit A’ir also. They were chosen for explicit symbolism here, but they are a very good low cost option for routes between most US cities, and also have routes to C’arribean destinations.

Very friendly flight crews and awesome service all round. Family friendly.

That they are HQ’d in M’iramar Fl is relevant to the movie. A few meanings – shameless contraction of an explicit translation to a colloquialism is one of them.

However – S’outh W’est did it for me with best landing ever. As plane touches down, intercom comes on and the crew with coconut halves and good horse impressions / wrangling calls bring the steed, erm plane, gently in to the paddock, erm, Gate.

Had great satisfaction in skinny-dipping on the return, it is not uncommon in the Lower Keys and spoke to some of the friendly natives who were doing the same.

I tend to go everywhere by car as there are so many places on the way. Dr’ove over 7,000 miles on one trip there. I had longed to see the only Wren Church I had missed in London. Problem was, it had been shipped out to Fulton, Missouri. Ticked that one at last! Next to it, the hall where WSC delivered his Iron Curtain speech. Topical again now!

    PCR says:

Don’t expect to live much longer

European governments and the Western media have put the world at risk by enabling Washington’s propaganda and aggression against Russia.

Washington has succeeded in using transparent lies to demonize Russia as a dangerous aggressive country led by a new Hitler or a new Stalin, just as Washington succeeded in demonizing Saddam Hussein in Iraq, the Taliban in Afghanistan, Qaddafi in Libya, Assad in Syria, Chavez in Venezuela, and, of course, Iran.

The real demons–Clinton, Bush, Obama–are “the exceptional and indispensable people” above the reach of demonization. Their horrific real crimes go unnoticed, while fictitious crimes are attributed to the unexceptional and dispensable people and countries.

The reason that Washington demonizes a leader and a country is to permit the creation of circumstances that Washington can use to act with force against a leader and a country.

Washington’s incessant lies alleging “Russian aggression” have created Russian aggression out of thin air. John Kerry and the State Department’s Marie Harf issue new lies daily, but never any supporting evidence. With the stage set, the US Senate, the NATO commander and the Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff are busy at work energizing the wheels of war.

Senate bill 2277 provides for beefing up forces on Russia’s borders and for elevating Ukraine’s status to “ally of the US” so that US troops can assist the war against “terrorists” in Ukraine.

Neither US nor EU really want R’ussian military to mobilize.

They would prefer P’utin to do the right thing and stand this down.

That will not happen, so exposing R’ussia’s true nature and allowing them to continue making mistakes is the order of the day. Unfortunately those mistakes are costing lives, but it needs to be understood clearly that those mistakes R’ussia are freely making themselves without any outside interference.

Agitprop will try to pin this on the US and apparent lack of action, but given that we are talking about two opposed nuclear armed super-powers, would it be responsible for the US to directly seek to escalate a military confrontation with R’ussia ? Short Ans: No.

That R’ussia are attempting to spin in that direction is provocative and irresponsible. As time goes on it really only discredits P’utin in the eyes of others. Problem for EU – If it doesn’t take a stand it will be next.

Unlike the US, which is separated by Oceans, Europe is very accessible to R’ussian ground forces. Unlike the US, European objection to R’ussia does not carry quite the same MAD baggage.

Close associate of Pr!makov – advisor to both P’utin / Yelts!n. Should be clear enough.

He is correct about the failure in A’fghanistan but is being cryptic about the implications of failure for R’ussia to bring U’kraine fully back into its sphere.

U’kraine is key for P’utin’s ambition to rebuild the R’ussian empire and in particular is important for the EEU structure R’ussia has been putting together over the past 20 years or so.

K’agaranov can be forgiven for agitating against the US as he does have a personal connection here. At C’F’R’ level the political boundaries between blocs breaks down a bit and people at that level will have split allegiances.

The fundamental problem with this situation is that for all its recent advances, R’ussia does not have a strategy for dealing with a passive aggressive opponent, and has been pushed into a state of paranoid action by insecurity.

Events surrounding the recent downing of the plane speak to that very clearly.

It would be wise to counsel P’utin that picking battles wisely does involve ensuring that the victories he is assured are not pyrrhic.

A full on R’ussian assault will eventually get U’kraine back within R’ussia, but in turn will prompt R’ussia’s isolation again.

P’utin is not an isolationist, and as he has sold a vision of R’ussia leading the world to his people, when his people realize what has happened in that regard, the consequences domestically will be very negative for all concerned.

It should not be ignored that in practice many around the world do not give a damn about the MH17 downing or loss of life.

They will care more about P’utin’s handling of this and his honesty and how R’ussia behaves as a partner.

Unfortunately the mindset in R’ussia – at all levels – will not allow P’utin the flexibility to step back and pause. That would be regarded as weakness which would see him ousted and could release something far worst in the country.

P’utin himself doesn’t really care much about any of this except to deliver on what he intends for his country. That, and a belief that God is on his side, will guarantee his legacy and perhaps victory. The current faux pas can be forgiven their side and life moves on.

That is some of the real danger which presents itself to us. Not understanding it is su!cide.

Opening up dialog with OSCE and adopting an unarguably conciliatory and mature diplomatic channel with the EU AND Ukraine to ensure that a new government is elected and maybe a treaty drawn up to ensure U’kraine can remain sovereign independent with access to both trading zones would be ideal.

In all of this, R’ussia does not need control of the territory for its EEU plan. It just needs good relations and trade access.

            EU is similar.

Both sides have things to offer U’kraine in terms of development etc. and independent U’kraine would provide needed buffer between M’oscow and B’erlin.

If that reasoning can be brought to being then the decree absolute in the divorce proceedings can be issued (hopefully you picked up that theme from the video :-) ) without further harm being done to the children.

Clegg’s words are understandable on many levels. It should not be overlooked that as a D’utchman he does have a direct personal interest here – The impact of this on H’olland is deep.

The countries you are speaking of are meant to be independent sovereigns. They were prior to the USSR – albeit some having adopted protectorate agreements with the R’ussian T’sar’s – those being invalidated once the R’ussian Crown was exterminated during the revolution.

There has been no attempt to bait R’ussia by the EU: That is just agitprop designed to excuse R’ussia’s actual military incursions into independent sovereigns.

You perhaps should say F’rance and G’ermany in the guise of the EU – but again that would not be correct. The real pressure within the EU to press for U’kraine accession would have been coming from E’astern States such as P’oland – who know only to well what R’ussia was up to and is like.

That however does not justify the military action which R’ussia pursued when annexing Cr!mea and henceforth. That can be seen as pure warfare after they had lost the peaceful political arguments for U’kraine to join with them.

If one believes press and TV reports, what happened in the Ukraine was another round of People Power. As if the sudden outbreak of protests just happened – out of the blue. And yet, the two words MSM and MPs avoid mentioning are Color Revolutions. For, as with Syria and other such countries, the US have spent a great deal of time and money on training the armed gangs. They have also put a great deal of efforts into dis-information aimed at undermining target governments. And, for some time now, the US government have been putting such tactics into action – to stir up trouble in Russia’s back yard. Given what appears to be NATO’s onward march to Moscow – is it any surprise how Russia has reacted? And now we are playing MAD cold war games with Putin.

The unwillingness of those in the West to wake up to it is though.

Incidentally, it was R’ussia who broke from the S’tart agreement and also de facto broke the INF treaty also. It is they who are playing MAD games with the US – just for the record.

US not responding is driving them nuts. Without a credible enemy P’utin knows his posture of ‘strength’ is working against him.

Aggressive agitprop also fails on this score.

In any case, whatever happened in M’aiden square – and R’ussia was more deeply involved in that than many realize – is irrelevant in the context of recently shot down civilian airlines by the guys they were backing in East U’kraine.

If you want a look at P’utin’s boyz – here are some of them:

      It changes nothing except:

      i) Further confirmation that BUK was moved into U’kraine from R’ussia.

ii) It was used during the shoot down of the plane. The launch site was visited by T’elegraph later with some inspectors who found the evidence that a missile launch had taken place. (Bits of metal / scorch marks)
      - The BBC reporter very likely did not know what to look for or had spent enough time looking for it.

iii) Rebels who were manning controls confirmed that cloud cover prevented them from seeing MH17 clearly from the ground. They only had radar visual.

How the two women could have seen anything at the time of the shootdown raises other questions. The sound of the missile heading to target would be similar to the sound that a fighter jet makes, on the ground.

Now – if the BUK had not shot the plane down then there would be no reason to move it. Very easy to count the unused missiles on that unit and disprove the initial claims.

R’ussian radar evidence presented showed 4 civilian airlines in the airspace at the time, and allegedly one U’krainian fighter jet. In that situation it would not be acceptable to deploy a SAM : It would be the equivalent of firing into a human shield. Radar does not provide visual images but may confirm MH17 transponder was working, hence question as to why BUK crew ignored their IFF warnings.

However, the rebels initially said that they were aiming for military transport planes – not fighters. The fighter jet story using civilian planes is cute and maybe a crafty strategy, but does not really make sense.

If they were present they would have been to escort planes safely, unlikely as civilian planes to that point had not been at risk in the area. That changed when the BUK was deployed.

It should be clear why the R’ussian version of events is not completely credible – and also why they have changed their story numerous times.

Protecting R’ussian ethnic citizens – presumably at the expense of U’krainians.

The National Socialist narrative breaks down when it is noted that there is nothing much national socialist about the politics, and the nationalism which is evident is more a reaction to R’ussia’s own nationalism which is being projected.

!srael is more or less aligned with R’ussia now as well. Could explain their renewed vigour against G’aza, and as R’ussia have been involved with H’amas recently, perhaps also G’aza’s renewed vigour against !srael.

    Extracted from the Israeli statement, admitting their bombing of the UN school;

“…The inquiry… concluded that a single errant mortar landed in the courtyard of the UNRWA school, when it was completely empty…”

The Israelis disputed any deaths caused, but again admitted that the bombing of the school courtyard ‘may have caused injuries’.

And yet no apology to the innocent children who may have been killed / injured or at the very least traumatised.

And I can see that normally placid friends and relatives who would normally avoid talking about Israel in public at all costs – for obvious reasons – are now voicing strong opinions about Israel and the US.

You are absolutely correct: we are all at fault for not making a bigger noise before now re: death of innocent civilians – and children in particular.

Maybe the Gaza trouble has had more MSM exposure than other conflicts ?
      I don’t know.

But the current trouble and atrocities seems to have touched a nerve in the general public in the UK – and there are encouraging signs that the MSM is also starting to ask questions it has shied away from before now.

The Jon Snow reporting has been quite moving and has struck a chord with many.

And this should not be just about Gazan children, but children caught up in any conflicts.

We should be able to protect innocent children at least in the 21st Century ?

I suggest that most of us, if not all, are horrified by the death of any child in these circumstances.

But just ponder this one thought. In the UK, how many missile sites are concealed in infant schools?

When you have an answer to this, you might advise us (as your perceived baby-eaters) how much more wretched is a system than ours, which lets these weapons of random mass killing be hidden inside places where young people regularly gather? Bear in mind that this is done as a military tactic of concealment and/or emotional blackmail. (Think about Beslan and the cynical, nay evil, mindset of these people.)

Your bleeding heart tears will, if successful in moving opinions, actually lead to many more deaths of those whom you purport to save.

Believe me, I would listen to any effective answer which would solve this conundrum.

        Rather than nitpick, I would interpret your comment as;
if a location, [e.g. a school ] is deemed a legitimate target then children could also get killed.

        That is fundamentally wrong.

Yes, parents could be forced – or even agree ? – to be ‘human shields’ but a child cannot decide where he/she will shelter.

        So, from another angle;

A civilised country would not knowingly bomb a target if it knew that innocent children would be killed and injured.

An uncivilised country would knowingly bomb a target knowing that innocent children would be killed and injured – and then simply shrug it off as ‘collateral damage’.

A country would gain respect if it could demonstrate care and compassion for innocents caught up unwittingly in the fighting.

It’s not about being a ‘bleeding heart’ but about being civilised.

[For balance I am not in anyway saying that Gazans are civilised either when placing weapons amongst civilians.]

In that case, I shall not nitpick either. You are effectively arguing that there is no such thing as a legitimate target.
