AUDIO:  Ward Refuses to Apologise Over Rocket Row

David Ward has told BBC Radio Leeds that he will not apologise for last night’s comments, insisting he is only sorry “it people misinterpreted” his admission that were he a Palestinian he would fire rockets at Israel. Ward confirmed he had spoken with the LibDem chief whip this morning, and that a statement from the party can be expected this afternoon. A mealy mouthed apology for ‘causing offence’, like last time, is unlikely to be enough…

Incidentally, Guido is too hungover to do a proper BBC rant, however, the soft line of questioning and the fawning thanks from the presenter in that interview was pathetic. Get Ward in front of Kay Burley, pronto.

Ward’s a twat but the way Geedo and others are leading this march to silence him is very sinister. Free speech is apparently ok in every other respect except when commenting on the middle east. In contrast, there’s been zero reaction the world over to the Is*aeli Knesset member who called for every last Palestinian to be exterminated. Funny, that.

There has been no talking for months. Israel clearly does not want a two-state solution, preferring to take over the West Bank by stealth. Gaza is no more than a secure prison for 1.8 million people. Unemployment is very high and there is widespread poverty. Basic public services are in crisis and the country is highly dependent on charitable organisations. There is no future for the people of Gaza other than staying locked up in their barren land. Is it any wonder they fire missiles at wealthy Israel, a country that wants Gaza to remain poor and undeveoped with no hope of change?

It will be interesting to see if Holland gets EU support over sanctions.

T’immermans makes an important point which perhaps both L’ondon and F’rance should take note:

Article is in Dutch but translates Ok.

This aspect of Foreign Policy should be divorced from pure trade concerns as the dominance of solely economic interests open diplomatic weaknesses for States which have been very demonstrably exploited over the past few years by less than honourable counter parties.

It should apply pressure to F’rance especially over M’istral, but the UK also. UK was told back in M’arch that all arms exports to R’ussia would end, and then reports yesterday that they are at all time high.

If EU does take a line on principal rather than trade that could ironically help get the UK out – good news for UKIP – albeit because the UK may have a bigger reason to protect its trade interests vs. EU.

Fully agree with Timmermans position, and it is one that the EU needs to consider carefully as it will help define the type of of Federal Union they are destined to become.
