Paxman: ‘I am a Tory… Newsnight is Made by 13-Year-Olds’

Freed from the shackles of the BBC behemoth, Jeremy Paxman seems to be enjoying getting off the fence and telling us what he really thinks.  It turns out he claims to be a closet Eurosceptic who believes Europe has been “nothing but trouble for us”, and has been secretly sound all along:“I am in favour of governments getting out of people’s lives. Particularly foreign government. The closer you can take decision-making to the people affected by those decisions, the better.” Speaking at Chalke Valley History Festival, Paxo revealed political leanings for the first time: “I have to be frank, I suppose I am a one-nation Tory, yes.” He also gave the audience his explanation for Newsnight’s shift to the left:

“Look, Newsnight is made by 13-year-olds. It’s perfectly normal when you’re young that you want to change the world. The older you get, the more you realise what a fools’ errand much of that is and that the thing to do is to manage the best you can to the advantage of as many people as possible.”

That explains Ian Katz’s tousled hair and youthful looks…

UPDATE:  Ian Katz responds:

Zoe recalls the 14 year-old Newsnight editor none too fondly…

Let it go Zoe, it was 30 years ago…

Unless they have at all times secured ongoing enthusiastic verbal consent to all sexual matters they are r.a.p.i.st.s. As are any white males reading this. Get used to it, your time has gone and it’s a multicultural diverse world now.

After all what has the white man ever given me?

Mrs Fatcher smashed the marxist union rats, she defeated the traitors who wanted us to be a Soviet satellite, she introduced fiscal discipline, she helped free the slaves of Communism, and she thrashed the argies.

I will never understand why she didn’t crush that nest of smug, sneering, chip on both shoulders, anti-english, champagne socialist, parasitic filth at the bbc

Let’s see, ‘marxist union rats’, ‘traitors who wanted us to be a Soviet satellite’, ‘slaves of Communism’, ‘anti-english, champagne socialist, parasitic filth’. No, despite having re-typed them, the loony remarks make no sense – but remain the same old hard-right BS. Do you work in Room 101 (at Tory HQ) by any chance?

Aren’t One Nation Tories the ones who want to be in the EU and are comfortable with big government? He sounds more like a Thatcherite but maybe he didn’t want to say that out loud.

I’ve always liked Paxman and I’ve always thought he was a bit of a closet Tory and for my hat trick its reassuring to find I am right with the mental age of the Newsnight clever clogs producers…This bunch of juvenile delinquents are driving Newsnight down hill so fast they’re likely to break the land speed record.

Is this Kissingberk wonan the new Paxman then ?

Personally I think they should go the whole hog and give it to Russell Brand complete with anonymous speaker phone and celebrity home telephone numbers
(coutesy NOTW — de cuius –of course).

Why even Wossy could stand in during holiday breaks (!)

The BBC is obsessed with youth(Savile Certainly was) says:

They are trying to jazz newsnight up to appeal to a younger audience so it can compliment all the other shite the BBC does which also tries to appeal to a younger audience.
The ageing population which we are told is growing obviously doesn’t matter to them.

The appointment of Katz was a serious error though. There should be a rule that nobody can move straight from the Guardian to the BBC so we can try to get a grip on how left wing it is.

That is the salient point here

He chose to spew the pro-Labour agenda on Newsnight, he should just retire gracefully not now whine about it

“I am in favour of governments getting out of people’s lives. Particularly foreign government. The closer you can take decision-making to the people affected by those decisions, the better.”

So I assume he will come out in support of Scots’ independence, given the above are exactly the reasons independence is aimed for?

      Carlo Gambino says:

A whopping 270,000 Scots contribute net net to the exchequer.

Every other bastid one of them is on the take.

Independence, if it arrives, which it won’t, will certainly not mean ‘not dependent’. The haggises don’t want *that* sort of independence.

Trust me their mouths will remain firmly superglued to one teat or another.

Scots want independence to spend other people’s money . Not independence and spend their own money . This is the real yes/no campaign

      • 62

Absolutely zilch chance Scots will vote YES.

Too addicted to their ” free” prescriptions and ditto elderly care without need to sell their HOOSE.

All paid for of course by central Govt . Albionic Largesse .

( and still that poltroon Camisole has only ONE Scot tory MP
        to show for it !)

    Goodbye Paxo says:

It’s perfectly normal when you’re young that you want to change the world.

Yeeessss, Paxo, but not via the medium of the BBC, which is supposed to be impartial but is in reality a left-wing broadcaster for which we are forced to stump up a poll tax on pain of imprisonment.

  23. 36
    Peter Grimes says:

    Katz 14? All under!

To be fair to Paxo it never came across that he was a Tory sympathiser, unlike the rest of his Al Beeb interviewers, whose Leftoid sympathies are always evident.

  24. 37

It is interesting to hear what Paxo has to say now that he is no longer constrained by the Beeb. Hopefully he does a tell all book.

Paxman heads to the right and turns his back on the BBC. And so, after years of being well paid (thanks to TV Tax payers), does Paxman bite the hand that feed him. Has he signed a contract with ITN or Sky News by any chance?

  32. 70
Who gives a damn what Paxman says:

Paxo’s just moaning because he’s lost the plot. Ian Katz wasn’t in charge when Newsnight spiked the Savile story and then rushed to smear McAlpine. Back then Paxman blamed “biddable types”. Newsnight has had a succession of leftie political and economic editors for years and years, long before the teenagers came in. It wasn’t the “biddable types” who hired them, either. Paxo sat there quietly and didn’t mind because the BBC was paying him enormous amounts of money to sneer and sigh a couple nights a week.

    Derek Chapman says:

As he gets older he gets more and more like Ed Reardon (complete with beard).
