WATCH: Cameron: “I am Extremely Sorry”

“I take full responsibility for employing Andy Coulson. I did so on the basis of undertakings I was given by him about phone hacking and those turned out not to be the case. I always said that if they turned out to be wrong that I would make a full and frank apology and I do that today. I am extremely sorry that I employed him. It was the wrong decision and I’m very clear about that.

I asked him questions about if he knew about phone hacking and he said that he didn’t and I accepted those assurances and I gave him the job. I would say that no one has made any complaints about the work that he did for me either as Leader of the Opposition or indeed here in Number 10 Downing Street, but knowing what I now know and knowing that those assurances weren’t right it was obviously wrong to employ him. I gave someone a second chance and it turned out to be a bad decision.”

Interesting interpretation of “full and frank”…

  8. 8
    OxfordSimon says:

That is the apology he said he would make 3 years ago – it is right that he did so.

Coulson may well appeal – and there is every possibility that he will win that. But it is not a given.

If you are lied to, the person who is at fault is the one who doesn’t tell the truth.

Sometimes you have to take things on trust – and sometimes that goes wrong.

  43. 43
    Fishy says:

I’m getting fucking sick and tired of the weekly outrage from Balls, Miliband and the left about something or other. If it’s not this, it’s Fabricant or something else.

I’m fucking sick of the hypocrisy from the people that brought us ’45 Minutes from Doom’

Labour’s ability to get their activists outraged and in front of the cameras in an instant (although they probably have had meetings with the BBC to plan how they would jointly work this story to their advantage) is where they leave the Tories for dead.

  44. 44

I think we can safely say that Andy Coulson definitely didn’t sleep with David Cameron or Boris Johnson, as the former council estate lad is found guilty of phone hacking and will go to jail.
Rebekah Brookes has been found not guilty on all charges ; I wonder why she is found not guilty and Coulson guilty? What could possibly have happened in the past for there to be such a marked difference in the two verdicts?

out of there infested wood work & smear the purple brigade

    yet again…..

Fcuk it , But I’m still VOTING UKIP in 2015 GE……

  55. 55
    James says:

I don’t see what he has to be sorry for. Employing a former journalist to be your communications director was a very sensible move, particularly one who was brimming with contacts and the know-how to manage the media agenda of the government, something which has been sorely lacking since his departure.

Let us note that Tony Blair also hired a Murdoch-employed journalist to do exactly the same job.

Hard to criticise someone for not being able to see into the future and detect that this person would one day be convicted of rather spurious crimes. For all we know his conviction came on a coin toss in the jury room. Right that he left the post when accused of serious wrongdoing, but in no sense are apologies needed for employing him in the first place. But such is the trivia that modern politics ties itself up in.

  56. 56
Mr Blair of the Labours says:

“If you are lied to, the person who is at fault is the one who doesn’t tell the truth.”

Try telling that to the Labour supporters who blame the Tories for believing the dodgey dossier and the 45 minute nuke warning.

  58. 58
    Cameron says:

I have exceedingly poor judgement, as has been shown on numerous occasions. This example is one of the more innocuous ones.

I wanted to invade Syria, but luckily UKIP and Miliband argued against me.

  59. 59
    Ed Milibandwagon says:

his crimes were committed under labour. And the Labour plod never worried them.
But his guilt occurred under a coalition so I must be super outraged.

  61. 61
    Fishy says:

So Bully Balls was like a rat up a drainpipe, just now, booming triumphantly on the HoC that Osborne has brought his office into disrepute and damaged his reputation.

Talking of reputations, has Balls forgotten his own current difficulty with the police and HIS (his, not one of his SPADS) impending court appearance.

  62. 62
    Fishy says:

It’s clear that the Tories have missed Coulson who kept a very tight ship.

But perhaps the real reason the Labour and the BBC hated him wasn’t so much that he was an effective operator, but that having worked closely with Bliar and Campbell, Coulson knew where all of the bodies were buried, especially those 45 minutes away.

  68. 68
    Fullabeanz says:

At least Cameron’s apology is full and comprehensive.

Compare that to Gordon Brown’s, and consider that Brown was apologising for the actions of McBride, who worked for him at the time of his wrong-doing…

She got off because she knows / is party to more serious information about corruption from atop which could bring the Murdoch’s and many others down.

George Galloway says of his former Respect candidate the UKIP MEP turned Tory, Amjad Bashir…

“Clearly Bashir does not have any real political principles or commitment, only naked opportunism and self-interest. He represents the revolving door principle in politics. The Tories are welcome to him because he will cause them embarrassment. Fortunately Respect was able to act before he did it to us.”
