Mike Freer, the Tory MP for Finchley and Golders Green, is in a spot of bother. He is being accused by local opponents of the oldest naughty trick in the book, delivering campaign material using House of Commons resources. Tory activists have been putting unsolicited letters campaigning on the mansion tax through the doors of residents in “well to do areas” in Freer’s constituency. They are headed on Commons notepaper and contain a freepost envelope addressed to his parliamentary office. Party political campaigning paid for by the taxpayer is against the rules.
