Put Carswell in No. 10

New City minister Andrea Leadsom achieves fame at last on the front page of the Indy today over her Margaret Hodge-style inheritance tax reducing trusts. Which reminds Guido that now she’s has been promoted to the Treasury that leaves a vacancy on the Downing Street Policy Board. Headed by Jo Johnson, the Policy Board is a Conservative party body, not to be confused with the No. 10 Policy and Implementation Unit. Whereas the Policy Unit shapes government policy, the Policy Board is a party instrument set up specifically to take views from backbench MPs. Some say it is merely a tool for backbench party management and a bauble for ambitious MPs. That may be.

Downing Street need someone who is not a yes-man, someone who is respected by his colleagues and someone who can bring radical, reforming ideas to the table.

They should look no further than Douglas Carswell… would he take the job?

In a Survation poll for the Mail on Sunday voters strongly backed Carswell’s ideas. Carswell should surely have a hand in writing the Tory manifesto…

ms leadsom’s use of offshore tax avoidance techniques while serving in a government ostensibly opposing tax avoidance may be consistent with her voting on ‘same sex marriages’

so torn was she by the issue that she voted both ways

the best of both worlds – the least votes lost?

      Jabba Le Chat says:

People seem to have short memories over the fact that Carswell voted for press censorship. That fact alone should preclude him from any serious consideration of moving up the greasy pole towards the top…

          • Bosun Higgs says:

There is some evidence for his being right. EU countries have lower growth and higher unemployment than comparable countries outside the UK; check Sweden/Norway, Austria/Switzerland, Greece/Turkey and Ireland/Iceland, although Slovenia/Croatia is a counter-example. There is plenty of evidence for tax cuts and lower government spending promoting economic growth and benefiting people at every level; for instance, the USA and the UK in the 1980s, but it is rarely attempted.

There is, conversely, no evidence that longer prison sentences do any good, rather that, beyond a certain point, it is the probability of being convicted that deters potential criminals.

          Essex boy says:

The trouble with Carswell is his looks.
Shallow to say I know but there is a serious side.
It wasn’t Michael Howards policies people rejected it was Michal Howard.
He looked and sounded like a gimp.
However it was his policies which were blamed for the loss of tory votes.
That is why we now have Cameron and his hug a hoody bum a bloke party.

Carswell isn’t ugly by any means. He looks like what he is: an ex-military officer who is now a middle aged father.

There’s a large section of the electorate, especially among those old enough to bother voting, who’d find him very attractive.

    Daedalus says:

Trouble is the two best ones, lower spending and less business regulations are pooh poked by our electorate. Just doing those would be so beneficial.

  35. 78
Welcome to the Hotel California says:

It looks like the electorate supports all the fluff but opposed the central economic plank of his manifesto. The 40-60 split is a lot better than the 10-90 split you’d infer from the BBC, but it’s not enough to win an election.

His father in law does earn £750,000 per year from the windmills on his farm which Cameron will

  41. 95
    Taxpayer says:

Thankfully for Cameron and his High Tax Party 59% don’t want tax cuts ( I imagine made up of all those who don’t pay a net contribution) so that allows him to continue to punish those who want to get on.
