Nigel Evans Cleared of Rape and Sexual Assault
No Immediate Restoration of Tory Whip

Evans was led from the dock in tears as local supporters and friends in the gallery erupted into cheers.

Not guilty on eight counts.

UPDATE: The Guardian are withering in their destruction of the CPS case against Evans:

“The prosecution case against Nigel Evans, the former Commons deputy speaker, began to fall apart as soon as his accusers entered the witness box. One by one, the young men trooped into Preston crown court and said they did not consider themselves victims of any criminal offence, nor had they wanted to complain to police.”

If you put all the poisonous stuff that he couldn’t defend in front of the jury, they convict. If you put up all the rubbish including rent boys who change their stories or job-seekers selling their souls for advancement, you infect the whole indictment and the Jury throw the lot out. Your don’t need to pervert jurors, they’re quite easy to manipulate. CPS played a blinder.

    SamWoe says:

    History in question!

There may be history behind this Nigel Evans case.
The police spokesman on TV had been involved with
this East Lancashire MP years ago – Speeding tickets
Blackburn HQ. Result – many changes thereafter.
One would have thought – This is the last copper,
that one would have expected to be involved,
with the, now Deputy Speaker. Certainly not even
    emptying the waste paper baskets.

Or perhaps pay back time. Don’t expect the CPS
would have added one and one together, there
are often changes in staff as better pay elsewhere.
But let’s assume everything was kosher – Still risky.

Nigel Evans cleared of all charges. Irrespective of
anyone else’s ideas on relationships, the charges
were brought, tested and cleared by a jury. But at
what of the expense to Mr Eaves, the public purse.

This is the second mega trial in Preston, ‘Ken Roach’
previously! That has ended in a not guilty verdict.
What is most amazing is ALL NOT GUILTY on a long
list of charges. That makes it even more alarming,
one would have expected with so much time &
money thrown at these two defendants –
At least one charge would have been proven.

Not sure who, police or prosecuting personnel were
common to both cases, but the Chief Constable along
with PPS chiefs – Need, one suspects to thoroughly
    examine these defeats.

Meantime no doubt Preston pubs & hotels can be
pleased at the Winter upsurge in business from media
both national & international coverage. However one
suspects the trials may be over , but the public summing
    up is vital plus urgent.
As in my Council chamber, I was expected to declare an
‘interest’ then depart the discussion if my colleagues
felt a conflict of issues. Not declaring was very serious.

Where did we, anyone go wrong?
    Was everything KOSHER?

Just like football, the management team is required to
win – dropping down the league table – Is a No! No!
    SamWoe

  104. 104
    Tom Catesby says:

Another bloody waste of public money. If these witnesses ‘trooped’ into court to state they did not consider themselves victims, one has to ask the question, whether the police and the CPS took that on board in the initial investigations and what was the nature of the advice given in the first instance to encourage seemingly reluctant witnesses to come forward and the intention and purpose of that advice?

  105. 105
    Tom Catesby says:

The CPS didn’t ‘discover’ anything, that’s not their job. Which is just as well, as they probably couldn’t discover anything on a clear day.

  106. 106
    olden1936 says:

Over and again, not guilty on all charges? So what happens next in these very expensive, high profile court cases? Clearly either the plaintiffs or those accused were lying through their teeth so are there to be follow up proceedings, or more likely shall each case be allowed to fade into vagueness yet again?

  107. 107
All in the name of Justice?? says:

The current thrust of CPS seems to be more focussed on being publicly vindictive, than actually getting people convicted on sound evidence.
The worst excesses of good old fashioned Victorian piety being fully embraced and further embellished, in the name of tittilating justice and their self determined humiliation of public figures, regardless of whether they are ever going to be found guilty or not.
No doubt the NOTW would have been proud of them.
Alison Saunders is unfit for purpose, in her current role.
All pretty sleazy, ugly, sordid and unhealthy.
Not to mention the cost of yet more taxpayers money being wasted, once again.
