Channel 4 News Economics Editor Runners and Riders mdi-fullscreen

Faisal Islam’s move to Sky News means there is a much-coveted vacancy for the Channel 4 News Economics Editor. As ever MediaGuido gives you the rundown of some of the likely main contenders:

  • Allister Heath: The City AM editor’s columns are essential reading and he has a great knack at explaining complex economics stories simply, which will stand him in good stead for a TV role. He has made City AM into a respected and profitable newspaper. Is he enjoying running his own newspaper too much to want to work for someone else?
  • Rob Hutton: Bloomberg’s Lobby funnyman is a numbers guy who hasn’t jumped ship for a decade. One of the most well-liked people in the business. Has broadcast experience on the Bloomberg TV channel seen in dealing rooms. Journalese vocabulary will translate onto TV.
  • Ed Conway: Could the merry-go-round see Sky News’ economics editor replace the C4 economics editor who is replacing the Sky News political editor? Has impressed with his Budget coverage recently.
  • Liam Halligan: Telegraph columnist Halligan has barely been off the telly recently, offering a stronger insight into the Russia-Ukraine situation that just about anyone else. He’s had the C4 News Economics job before…
  • Dharshini David: Beaten to the ITV News business editor job by her Sky colleague Joel Hills, Dharshini will surely throw her hat into the ring for C4 as well.
  • Gillian Tett: The FT’s decorated assistant editor and finance commentator is another heavyweight contender. Guido suspects she has her eye on a bigger prize.
  • Becky Barrow: The Daily Mail’s business correspondent is another who had a good Budget. Bit wet for the Mail but could be a better fit at C4.

Guido’s inbox will no doubt shortly be sent more tips for the post.

You stay classy, Britain…

UPDATE: Maybe Dharshini’s bosses want to keep her:
