Dobbs Bemoans Lack of Whip Action Over EU Bill

As Lord Dobbs prepares for the launch of Season Two of House of Cards on Friday, Guido can report a Machiavellian plot worthy of his characters. The progress of the EU Referendum Bill came to a grinding halt when the Lords voted against it. The vote turnout was a surprisingly low 310 out of a potential 800, on a subject that really brings old Tory lords to life. Some 90 Tory Lords were missing during the vote. Dobbs led in the Lords for the Tories and has privately voiced his dismay to friends at the lack of effort put in by the Tory whips in the Lords. Cynical old hands suspect that it suits Dave only to be seen to be pushing for a referendum bill with opponents voting it down.

It highlights to the public that it is the Tories and not UKIP which can bring about a referendum and unites Tory MPs under one banner in an endless war. You might say that actually passing the Bill would mean the PM would be closer to actually having to do something about the EU. Guido couldn’t possibly comment.

    The Great British Public says:

David Cameron is a liar and cannot be trusted.
He has stated he wants to stay in the European Union and will never take this country out.

He should be removed as PM ASAP otherwise the Conservatives will stay out of power for the next 15 years at least.

The 1922 Committee has some work to do…

    Blowing Fairytales Away ... says:

    Here’s a question

Did the then Labour Government under Brown have the ‘consent’ of the electorate to sign the Lisbon Treaty [LT]

or did the then government by methods of legal trickery assume consent by legal default?

i want to see where i gave my written or otherwise consent for Brown to sign the LT.

Isn’t it all about informed consent and or of that consent; having been wrongly (illegally / unlawfully) assumed?

  23. 23
    Jeremiah says:

Is that right, 800 lords entitled to sit in the HoL, that needs reducing down to 500 voted in on a proportional representation basis, all Lords hereditary and the others (riff-raff) eligable to stand and put to the vote of the people.

    Casual Observer 6 says:

No – they were the symptoms of an individual who is under extreme stress.

It is probably not a time of happiness and joy in chez Cameron at present. If his constituency itself floods, then what with the lead being stolen of the church roof, those in the village will be having all the wrong sort of conversations over dinner.

Dave is also probably having a cognitive failure of sorts as he realizes that common sense and regard of nature trumps his double first in PPE.

To that point, a fly on the wall in a recent COBRA meeting probably would report conversations where Dave is pleading for an act of God / Miracle to fix the problems he is now facing and save his worthless political arse, and the chiefs of staff are responding that in practice there is nothing that can be done and all of this is due to lack of basic land and waterways management.

Such a shame that Cameron squandered his blame the last Labour government get out of Jail Free cards, and didn’t fix the actual problem after getting into office.

He will likely blame the last Labour government when he loses his seat next year.

  26. 26
    BC says:

No need for any discussion whatsoever. The pro EU position of all three main political parties is self evident.

Our narrowly educated and unemployable masters know better than us plebs.

  27. 27
    The LibDems reneged says:

It’s not going to happen. The LibDems have always campaigned for this, like they always did for an in out EU referendum and neither has happened while they are in government.

  28. 28
    Casual Observer 6 says:

Brown wasn’t even elected on a mandate to be Prime Minister at the time.

He took over after Blair stood down, promising to call an election, then didn’t bother and signed that document without any consultation of the people.

The signature on that document is about as valid as a Cameron cast iron guarantee.

  29. 29
    Blowing Fairytales Away ... says:

i know thank you very much – but just wanted to know if you knew about the mandate thing that someone raised here long ago.

  30. 30

There was never going to be a referendum is just a scam to try to stop the flow to UKIP.
even the promise to spare NO EXPENSE on the flood problem has already been wartered down. The man is full of bullshit

  31. 31
    Jack Ketch says:

“A new Conservative Government would then take back the instrument of ratification and put the treaty to a referendum, recommending a ‘No’ vote.

That is the honourable and democratic thing to do.”

However it does suggest parliament has been infected with a common purpose.

I wonder how many other than the 310 claimed expenses that day!!!

  34. 34
    Ancient seafarer says:

How many more times does it have to be said that Brown snuck away in the night and put his mark on the document A F T E R he had been voted out of power. He therefore had not one jot of legal authority to sign it on behalf of the UK.

I do wish the MSM would highlight this fact and then Dave can tell the EU to eff off and mind its own business as the UK is NOT a Party to the {whatever it is called this week}.

  35. 35
    Ancient seafarer says:

I thought a Treaty after signature had to lie in parliament for a while and be discussed in detail and then approved by MPs BEFORE any Ratification authority letter can be issued for signature by HM.

If the kvnts at the FCO let this through without following the proper procedures then whoever ordered it should be strung up tot he nearest tree.

Were the FCO Legal Advisers asleep at the wheel?

Plus there was nothing to stop HM refusing to sign and then telling Mr Brown to go away as the people had decided that he was no longer Her Prime Minister. I still cannot understand why she so easily signed away her sovereignty to an unelected body of foreign bureaucrats. She has been in that job for the lifetime of most of her subjects and should by that time have known her own powers.

Alan Milburn says Labour’s scaremongering campaign for an unreformed NHS will not win election…

“It would be a fatal mistake, in my view, for Labour to go into this election looking as though it is the party that would better resource the National Health Service but not necessarily put its foot to the floor when it comes to reforming. Look, reforms are not easy, but the Labour Party is not a conservative party. It should be about moving things forward not preserving them in aspic. You have got a pale imitation actually of the 1992 general election campaign, and maybe it will have the same outcome. I don’t know.”
