Quote of the Day

Earlsfield resident Olivia Seccombe writing to the Wandsworth Guardian:

“I would like to question the judgement of Tooting’s Member of Parliament, Sadiq Khan, now Babar Ahmad has been found guilty of running websites that allegedly sought to raise money, recruit fighters and seek equipment for terrorists in Afghanistan and Chechnya… Now this man has been found guilty – after a full and fair trial in the States – I would like Mr Khan to answer firstly, what his concerns with the legal process were and secondly, why he spent so much time campaigning for this man when he should have been representing Tooting in Parliament?”

He wasn’t “found guilty”, he acceded to the ridiculously warped US justice system where the penalty for not accepting your guilt without trial is usually orders of magnitude harsher than taking the deal. A one player Prisoner’s Dilemma if you will.

Or am I thinking of the other one.

Either way no-one on terrorism charges is getting a fair trial in the US.

Given that you’ve attended zero trials and heard none of the evidence in any terrorism case in the US, what you actually mean is that in your prejudiced anti US little mind no one gets a fair trial – pure supposition based on your own petty minded bigotry.

      Mr Pedant says:

I don’t think there really is a penalty for “not accepting your guilt without trial”.

I think if the accused is found guilty after previously pleading innocence, then his/her punishment is far harsher. But that’s a different thing.

      • 10

        Quite correct.

If you are innocent and you are found innocent, then that is how justice should be.

If you are innocent and you are found guilty, then that is a miscarriage of justice.

If you are guilty and you are found innocent, then that is also a miscarriage of justice but a better one than the one immediately above.

If you are guilty and you are found guilty , then that again is how justice should be.

The Americans were very much swayed by the pragmatism of William James. As the wags would say: It is alright in theory but it does not work in practice.

Adervsarial or inquisitorial – both have been subjugated by the thieving, lying and duplicitous ranks of the tradebody of ‘Shyster’.

Their days are numbered – especially the motherfuckers who have been allowed to weasel their way into political top jobs.

Not one of their senior legion of old boys ‘dares’ to out their game – but their game is outed.

Hanging is for them – in a surreal and ironic twist of fate perhaps.

A not guilty verdict is no longer the end of the matter , ask those in prison after being acquitted of a famous case which we were never allowed to forget .

You get a larger sentence in the UK for failing to admit guilt too, so what’s your point?

    Newsfox says:

Well put aside the fact he gets far less for pleading guilty and his trial probably wouldn’t be overly fair, the whole point was that he’d been kept in prison for nine years, I believe without even a charge being brought.

Newsflash: that’s not how justice is supposed to work. If that law applied beyond terrorism, we’d live in a police state.

The campaign was right. I’ll support every single other campaign thats fights against laws which give police and security services powers that we plebs spent centuries trying to get.

    Take that Harry bloody Secombe.

Rod Liddle on the loony UN sexism special rapporteur:

“There is more sexism in Britain than in any other country in the world, according to a mad woman who has been sent here by the United Nations.

Rashida Manjoo is a part-time professor of law at Cape Town University in the totally non-sexist country of South Africa (otherwise known as Rape Capital Of The World).

Mrs Magoo has been wandering around with her notebook and is appalled by the sexist “boys’ club” culture here, apparently.

I don’t doubt we still have sexism in the UK. But is it worse than in, say, Saudi Arabia, d’you think, honey-lamb? Or about 175 other countries? Get a grip, you doolally old bat.”
