Burnham’s £189,637 Bottled Water Bonanza

Bercow interrupting Cameron just as he was about to slap down Andy Burnham – “I’m not going to take lectures from a govenrment who had patients drinking out of vases” – had the PM properly hitting back at the Speaker. That mooted 1922 letter never came, but the Tories are publicly bashing Bercow again this afternoon.

To be fair to Dave, attacking Labour on Mid Staffs is one of his best lines, so no wonder he was peeved. One that Bercow certainly wouldn’t let go uninterrupted: as neglected patients were forced to drink from vases, Burnham’s department spent £189,637 on bottled water when in government. The champers clearly wasn’t enough…

“Burnham really has some serious questions to answer over the NHS and his apparent mishandling of it!”

Burnham was only in post for less than a year.

One of the very first things he did within a month of appointment was to order an inquiry into Mid Staffs.

So…what was that “apparent mishandling” you were talking about?

If you had actually read any of the reports on Mid Staffs you’ll find that no-one presented any evidence that this had happened.

Good line – shame it’s a lie…a bit like most of Cameron’s lines.

Burnham was in office at the DoH from 5 June 2009 – 11 May 2010 by which time the cost of providing bottled water – not buying it – had reduced by about 2/3rds.

    That’s from your own link.

Still, who cares about facts eh?

Not you clearly – nasty little prick.

There seems to be a culture that has crept into the NHS over the years that nobody does the basics any more, my mother had a stroke and I accompanied her to the hospital in the ambulance, loads of tests were done over a period of several hours and being wheeled from one department to another, I collared a nurse and asked if it was possible for her to have a cup of tea, she said yes and disappeared never to return, anyway I found a water cooler down the corridor and made several trips over the hours. The point being if she had been admitted on her own (no relatives), despite all those admirable tests and assessments by doctors and consultants she would probably have been finished off by dehydration. Basics!.

I don't do do sick says:

It went downhill when they amalgamated SEN and SRN and sent them all to university. Prior to this SRN(State Registered Nurse) were the “officer class” Staff Nurses, Sisters and beyond that required an entry level of at least 5 O levels and possible A levels whilst the SEN(State Enrolled Nurse) were the girls(and it was girls then)who were not so academically minded but had a vocation to care for people and did not want to undertake the more involved senior roles

Its 2013, nursing is now totally different from 30 years ago as treatments improve and patients are sicker and older requiring more technical expertise from nurses. Most profession in the NHS now require degree level training, DR`s, Physio`s, Speech therapists, Occupational theraists, Dieticains etc etc Why should Nurses who spend far more time with patients than any of these groups receive a lesser training ? it doesnt make sense.

        • 80
          Bluto says:

But the basic nursing care required – feeding, providing water, cleaning, assisting with bodily functions has never changed. Modern “degree level” nurses (especially the fat-arsed Thornberry types in baggy green pjs) seem to think those duties are beneath them and it is that care which has so badly deteriorated. Contract cleaners could never be expected to ensure wards are kept clean in the way nurses used to do as part of a very strictly enforced regime invigilated by senior staff down.

The results are obvious. The profession is in crisis but refuses to see the wood for the trees.

          • Anonymous says:

Why do you say “degree level” regarding Nursing ? as though they shouldnt worry their pretty little heads about such things ? You are a fool. I would guess that your dear old Mum was an SRN, and has dined out on whingeing about todays nurses for ages ! They wouldnt lasr 5 minutes today !

          • Bluto says:

Er, because you mentioned the need for “degree level training” for modern nurses!

Your guess would be wrong. But I am old enough to compare the hospital care I received under the old regime with the “care” I received from “modern”, “degree level” nurses more recently. Your reply has dodged my point and merely retaliated with an attempt to slag off veteran nurses and to slag me off. Arrogant, ageist and abusive.

I don’t think it is I who is the fool in this exchange . . .

In fact patients suspecte of having a stroke should not eat or drink until their swallow reflex has been assessed by a specialist nurse or a speech therapist.I hope your Mother didnt aspirate any liquid in to her lungs when you gave her a drink.

How could they have drunk water from vases when vases were removed from the wards years ago? Also “as many as 1″ person may have died needlessly at Midstaffs… but don’t let the facts prevent you from spinning!
